Rio's ideas are pretty interesting as she brings up Schrödinger's cat. As Mai is the cat here. In the case both the cat is dead and alive. Mai is obviously alive, but more and more her presence in everyone's memories in school is disappearing. So, in theory, she can also be considered dead. The school replicates the box. When you are observing something like here you can know Mai exists. Once you sleep, you need to regain that observation if not, she very well might not exist since you don't recognize her. Though the term atmosphere is quite odd because it stretches out beyond the school.
Given how much Sakuta wants to help Mai, it is no surprise he would even sacrifice sleep to find something. Of course, Mai herself isn't one that would want him torturing himself for her sake. Hell part of it is also him sacrificing his studying. Mai, after overhearing Rio & Sakuta's conversation, knows what will happen if Sakuta sleeps. No doubt she doesn't want him to sleep and forget her, but it wouldn't be fair to him.
As Sakuta forgets Mai, he lost observation of her. Though what makes him regain the observation is very interesting. It seems his time studying with Mai triggers memories. He learned various things after studying with Mai. Given that he remembers, then it would conclude his memories of her would come back. Thus, he regained observation of Mai. Though I do think when Sakuta kind of blames the student body for ignoring Mai, that's a weird situation more so. Of course, Mai is hurt, but you can't blame the students being affected by the phenomenon.
Now that study was what helped Sakuta remember Mai, we next have his cringe confession. As Sakuta confesses his love for Mai, the student body takes focus. The catalyst is Sakuta's feelings here. Sakuta loves Mai, but the student body doesn't know who Mai is. We know Sakuta to them exists, but to continue to believe Mai doesn't exist would be to not acknowledge that love he has for Mai. Clearly, the majority of students wouldn't think like that. Which is the trigger for them to remember her.
A well executed emotional moment. Also, despite Mai's tough act, you can tell how hurt she was that Sakuta forgot her. It's effortless to imagine even when Sakuta forgot her, she wasn't shown once, but she was clearly around.
