There was no consensus GOAT because no one really deserved that accolade. All those players in truth are all relatively close to each other.

Certain sections of the media was also giving Bird GOAT title during his reign of 3 successive MVP's .

I started watching ball in the 80s and I remember Bird being considered the GOAT, even the announcers would constantly try to compare Jordan to Bird as what Jordan need to be like to win....

MJ won the NCAA title as a freshman when he was the 3rd option on a team with Sam Perkins and James Worthy. He scored 6, 11, 15, 18, and 16 in his five tourney games. Perkins led the way in the semifinal game with 25 and Worthy led the way in the championship game with 28.

The rest of his college tourney career was just a string of L's.

Upset in the 2nd round of the ACC tourney by NC State
Upset in the 3rd round of the NCAA tourney by Georgia
Upset in the 2nd round of the ACC tourney by Duke
Upset in the 2nd round of the NCAA tourney by Indiana

In the final game of his college career he was 6-14 for 13 points in an upset loss to Indiana, when North Carolina had an entire roster of 1st-round NBA talent and Indiana had nobody.

Didn't even make an ACC tourney semis or an NCAA Final Four in his last two years of college and that's supposed to be the GOAT college career?

I’m really trying to understand the narrative that MJ was the GOAT collegiate player. I don’t see anything that points to it. I think people let his NBA success bleed over into his NCAA years and just assume the GOAT NBA player had to be the GOAT NCAA player.

Real heads who know there history know there is only one man to dominate three different eras of basketball.Kareem. Im glad he is leading this pole as he definitely deserves too. Also a real ass dude off the court that aint afraid of saying what needs to be said. His post moves redifined the game. No kareem there would be no hakeem and many others.

Before Jordan deaded the argument with the 2nd 3peat, it was almost universally thought of as Wilt.

Bird & Magic kind of cancelled each other out. They had their supporters, but they were partisans

Kareem was carried by Magic to most of his chips, even winning in '80s without Kareem. Plus, Kareem was disliked by the media.

Oscar Robertson was another guy who would get some traction.

So, being an NBA obsessive in say 1996, which I was, I'd see a lot of Jordan vs. Wilt or Jordan vs. Oscar arguments on ESPN, in magazines, etc. . .

It's crazy how Wilt & Oscar have been completely written out of the argument without even doing anything.
