This thread kind of hits home for me...in college if you're black and not a student athlete people treat you like you're invisible or you just don't matter. Even girls ignore you.It's crazy because I'm from and stay in the hood and I go to a local university. I get more respect from non-blacks on campus than I do from blacks in my hood with exception to the OGs. Misery loves company homies. That's why I'm in the gym every night. nikkas trying to squabble out here
Went to a university of over 45,000 and had only 2 friends there...all of my friends that i hung out with didnt even go to school at the time. Random graffiti writers, artists, skaters, djs...etc. i would just do work at school and leave.
I actually went down the physical self improvement route like you my final year. Spent 42 weeks in the gym 5 days a week...signed up for phys ed classes. Eventually i had people coming up to me and asking me if i was on the football team or basketball team and when i told them neither they stopped talking to me. Didnt even get any play with the ladies on campus my last year either. Needless to say though i went to a PWl that probably had more black people playing on the football and basketball teams then actually enrolled for academics. Those were some sad and lonely times and I'm beyond happy I graduated.
Had this chick on my roster and the subject if classes came up. When I told her I was taking chemistry and stats she said "boi you takin that nerd shyt

This is why I joined the coli - to post in an area of with other motivated black men who are trying to become something in life and defy stereotypes. OP I feel where you coming from because I too am in a similar situation as you and have felt the same frustration before.

Umm....how do i respond to this?
Do you see me bashing black people? Do you see me resorting to broad stokes of a brush to describe black people? No. Just that the thread and it's subjects at hand refer to black people. And while i know and am very well aware that there are many of us that are cultured, intelligent, creative, etc ( i have worked with such people pleasurably) i am very well aware that talents outside of athletics and entertainment dont get the necessary praise it should from fellow black folks.
Which is the issue. How does it feel to get props for something from other races but not your own? Ive been there...its hurts.
Okay...i skateboard for fun and as a hobby...im just going to talk about a little something i feel has more than likely ran it's course.
I grew up in Pittsburgh...i would skate around the city. I would ALWAYS have other black people call me things like "oreo", "white boy", even call me an "uncle tom" and a wannabe...theyd even get angry at me and give me mean looks when i would be skateboarding around town.
Then i moved to nyc...im so happy there are so many black people that skate and build each other up and its cool amongst the younger generation and i feel like it was really what people like me were doing back then that gave those black kids the courage to go out there and skate and express themselves.
But yeah...that crab in the barrel mentality was sad to see.

I feel like we need to big up more black people in engineering, in architecture, in science, in technology, in mathematics, in computer technology/science, in medicine, in chemistry, in the fields that matter...represenatation matters like @PhonZhi says. Black people grow up not seeing themselves in these roles and it becomes limiting to the scope of their own perspective at that time.
Now im not going to shyt on black men and women in sports and entertainment (technically im an entertainer as a dj) especially because those have given many opportunities they wouldnt of had...but in the long run only a few can realistically make it in those fields and the window of opportunity for success is small.

I remember i used "a big word" and one of my friends looked at me side ways and they was like oh here he go with these words. Cant remember the word, but it wasnt anything impressive. A word on the level of "facetious".
Long story short, ironically , i think we was listening to lil boosie and he said the exact same word. It was all good then cause his favorite gangsta rapper said it.

But ive just seen the struggle that young black men and women go through chasing their dreams outside of sports and entertainment and it made me feel like black people dont support the best and brightest like others. Not even on some keeping up with the jonses shyt...
I see it here in NYC. For black men and women in the arts, in science, in fashion, in engineering, hell damn near any field your just dealing with the motions of being a black person in a predominantly white field. Its rough. We dont get the same financial support, grants, loans, and funding that white artists, designers, creatives get. Most treat them like an anomaly and not even with the respect they so rightfully deserve. Some even view you as out of place. Its 2015 and we're still having firsts. Why dont these black artists, creatives, scientists, engineers, get the same amount of praise as black athletes and entertainers do? Most of us arent even aware they exist until there's an article written about them after the fact. Its almost as if our views of blackness and success and intelligence and innovation are purposefully obscured from a broader scope to a more narrow one.
Kind of the reason i stopped making threads on art and different types of music outside of hip-hop and r&b...ot doesnt get the same amount of love.
