Hey I guess that is why I come here... To encounter conversation that I would never hear amongst my peers and coworkers in real life...

I'm trying to imagine myself having a Justin Timberlake vs Robin Thicke debate with someone I know :dead:

I actually did in my office and I embarrassed myself going hard for JT :snoop:...I got a little to personal with it. My co-workers were looking at me like :whoa:..Afterwards I felt like a douche.

To be successful in the music industry is more complicated than you make it seem like. You have to have actual talent (sometimes), work ethic, vision, right label with proper plan and marketing strategy, connection, persona, dedication, attitude and the perfect timing to blow up. Skin tone is very small factor (I hope). Talented and original singers and rappers from all races are struggling to make it. It's talent vs. no-talent battle rather than black vs. white. and thats the bottom line.

For instance, you got this (white) singer who sound like Robin Thicke and Maxwell in a way but never got his big break:

Remy Shand - Take A Message - YouTube

Timerlake is closer to Usher than Maxwell but then again I've never been a fan of Timberlake so I don't know :manny:

I agree with you on a lot of what you said. But I think you can have all the things that you've stated, but if the gatekeepers think you can't make them any money, you aren't going to get that industry push, and a lot of times the industry wants you to be able to appeal to everybody, not just a certain demographic.

That Remy Shand is smooth, but his sound is more adult R&B, which only sells units in a certain demographic, so I could see why he didn't blow in a major. Plus the industry may have wanted him to change his style to appeal to the masses and he said no.

So the only color that matters today may be green. But it's also a matter of brand recognition as well. you usually see the type of promotion that timberlake is doing when a blockbuster movie is coming out and the actors hit all the media outlets to promote it.

I think the industry is trying to streamline their rosters down to a few stars that can make dollars but not make thought provoking or genre defining music. A lot of big name musicians who once sold may have to go the indie route now.

I don't know why anyone has to get a pass. Even though race is certainly still an issue, especially in the south, not everything is about race. You can enjoy Robin Thickes music, and JT's album. If you want to call either of them "culture" stealers, thats your choice. Most modern music has inspiration from black music. As for JT throwing Janet under the bus, he apologized, and she didn't. It has nothing to do with her being a black woman. At that point in time he was attempting to make the transition of becoming more than that that kid from N'sync. Janet had a great career at that point. Most people are going to protect themselves before someone else, thats just how it is especially in the entertainment business. He could have had her back more, but lets not pretend its a race issue, she just happened to be black, and he happened to be white.

:birdman:

Janet apologized. She apologized on more than one occasion. She apologized so much people actually told her she should stop. She even created a video of apologizing.

It does have to with race. If Justin was not promoting himself as being "down" his betrayal of his idol wouldn't have been that much of an issue. True colors. We see what he's really about now.

yep Remy Shand ended his own career, just fell back due to industry pressure/rules and etc...he was kind of considered a Maxwell knock off also. dude bit D'Angelo heavy too, especially with that take a message video, I remember him catching flack for that....even with that said his album was dope, I copped it when it came out
