a lot of the early Hip Hop recordings had funk bands doing the "beats" before they moved on to drum machines

They had live bands cuz they couldn't afford drum machines..if they had money than they wouldn't be using live bands..

nah they had live bands because people like Sylvia Robinson didn't know shyt about Hip Hop, all they knew was cats were performing to breaks like Good Times so they had a band come in & do disco/funk jams. recording Hip Hop was a new thing, you can't capture what Cold Crush did at a club or they thought they didn't need the DJ, they didn't understand it.
That shyt doesn't sound good most of the time.

Well I've seen jay z, Ross, Wayne, tip, big boy, lupe and a few more people live a few times and they all used bands in some kinda way but they also had the dj 2. It just brought a new level to the product of the show. I've never seen drake live tho other than him doing a guest appearance with Wayne for like one verse.
