The first reason is cost. It's very expensive to hire musicians and then the accompanying costs of their equipment (maintenance), studio time to learn the music and practice it etc.

Chemistry. Most rappers aren't in bands. You cannot just put some cats who can play guitar, keys, horns in the room with a rapper and go. These aren't session players from the jazz era who could work with minimal communication. There's a natural way that a rapper performs with a DJ. I know that many rappers cannot perform well but that's their fault and also a lack of knowledge. Playing with a band is a team sport.

The actual music. Modern hip hop isn't made with sheet music. You have to either have the band there from the start of the music or have them come in and look at all the records, break it down and figure out what they are going to do. If the person who made the music is there, then the process can be expedited and be a lot more smooth on the back end. That person knows what every note should sound like and how to communicate that to a instrument player. Most of the time it's, "That's the beat I rapped to.".

It doesn't always work well. I was at a Nas concert last year, and the live band basically ruined almost every song..
saw nas 2 years in a row, the first was with a dj/instros and the second with a live ban

the live band was fukkin terrible. shyts wack imo

A better question would be why don't they use the same state of the art equipment that house dj's do.

Are you a dumb ass..James brown didnt invent hip hop..it came from kool herc a mafukking DJ spinning breaks off vinyl..no live band what so ever..
:snoop:
No, James brown invented THE FUNK.
Which is one of the biggest (if not THE biggest) influences
on Hip Hop music.
Don't you know that Kool Herc was juggling breaks from James Brown records
among other artists ?
That's where it started, from taking the most
"Rappable" parts from records, which were usually funk and rock records.
Eventually they moved on from juggling records to
sampling those same sounds on drum machines
like the sp1200 and MPC.
From there on sampling only got more and
more sophisticated until new laws
were implemented that somewhat stifled it's
growth.

This is one the reasons that Hip Hop music
can translate so well to a band.
It's not like Dubstep (another form of electronic music...)
that''d be pretty damn difficult to replicate with a band .

Rappers don't necessarily need sheet music to rap.
Pretty much all Hip Hop music is written in common time so
they'd just be rapping it how they would rap it over
their instrumental.
I think the difficult part would be translating what you can over
to a four piece band.
Certain sub-genre's like Trap have a big sound
and use a lot of brass, it would be difficult for example
to bring that with just a bass guitar, guitar, drum kit etc.
You'd likely need to bring on more people for a more accurate
and thus better live show.

:wow: @ The thought of Waka Flocka with practically
an orchestra behind him.

Hip Hop isn't made with sheet music but I know at least some
of these programs should be able to export sheet music.
I know I can do it in FL, with that said you have a point I think
the average rapper just doesn't have the musical knowledge necessary
to explain an instrumental even if they have built up significant
skill in creating that music.

Overall your post is on point though.

I think more rappers need to stop rapping with their vocal tracks in the background.
