I have a question about this for baseball heads. I just saw Trout is batting .290. Not bad average by any stretch of the imagination but back when I was really into baseball the best players were batting, .309, .320, etc.

Is the standard lower now cuz PEDs are out the game?

its because people value other stats now like On Base Percentage, Slugging Percentage, On Base + Slugging percentage. The way baseball players have been evaluated has changed. It's not lower standards its just expanding and taking into considering other things besides just average, HRs and RBI's. Thats why WAR reigns supreme these days, it's showing the players full value compared to a replacement level player

In like every other sport there’s atleast some debate to be had.

But ask who the greatest hockey player is and you’ll get “Gretzky :yeshrug:
He was the Prime Jordan of ice hockey and there are other great hockey players, but there's no Prime Kobe of ice hockey. Mario Lemieux is close but not enough to make a solid argument.
Bobby Orr was good for "his era" but doesn't even come close to Gretzky. That's like comparing Prime Bill Walton to Prime Jordan.

Gretzky's scoring and assist totals are the equivalent of Cy Young having 511 wins as a pitcher. A breh would have to AVERAGE 25 wins for 20 seasons...and he'd STILL need 12 more wins to beat the record.

For hoops, it'd be like someone averaging 30/10 for a career or something.

Pittsburgh fans will argue to the death Lemieux > Gretzky

Lemieux in his prime >>>> Gretzky but he didnt last long enough to make it a real debate.

He was statistically the only one on pace to catch Gretzky...

It's a lot closer than people think and I wouldn't even argue against it.

Lemieux was putting up ungodly numbers in his prime and he was literally playing with cancer and smoking a pack a day

If he played with the longevity of Gretzky and was able to stay healthy, he would be close to or would break some of those records. The man was an absolute tank and would bulldoze past 2-3 players, deke out another and so neat and gently, put the puck past the goalie.

Exhibit A:

And that was "past his prime" Mario (he put up 50 goals, 72 assists - 122 points- McDavid led NHL in scoring this year with 108)

GOAT all time playoff goal....and the call was :wow:

Plenty of guys are hitting way over .300 this season. Trout is just off to a slow start by his standards.

Where does Peter Forsberg rank on the all time list?

Top 30 all time player like Lemeiux injuries cut his career and stats short.....Would have been easily a top 10 all time player if he stayed healthy longer.

His PPG average was top 10 in the league that tells you how great he would have been...

Only the true elite average 1.00 PPG anything under is good but not elite...

Had a cac argue that because the goals got smaller and the equipment bigger that Gretzky is overrated and ovechkin and Crosby would have been just as good in his era
You had an argument with a complete boob.
Goal has remained the same size.
Equipment got bigger, but if you look at all his goals, the bigger equipment would not have made a difference. He was playing goalies who weren't playing the butterfly style so he essentially beat them top shelf with accuracy.
Ovechkin is a one-way player. He's good at scoring, and dangerous on the breakaway, but he's not as much a playmaker as Gretkzy.
Crosby is talented and there's no doubt about that and is responsible for making the Penguins a threat in the Eastern Conference. He's not as one-way as Ovechkin, but he has a back-up in Evgeni Malkin so the team has a two-way threat. The Capitals don't have a second all star.

Crosby’s definitely the best player of his generation and top 10 all time
