You may think its crazy but without the label, that opportunity wouldn't presented itself to begin with. That's a label's key argument. I feel the percentage or what monies earned should be contingent on how much the label initially invest.

360 deals will have you in Richard Simmons exercise videos rapping with purple leggings if it means the label will see a few thousand for your recouping expenses

i feel you and unltimately i think we agree. what i'm saying is, the artist must be buying something that the label is selling if they are giving up that much. even if it's just a dream they are buying. the artist is buying the right to associate their name to the brand of the label, buying the "status" that comes with being signed to a major, they are buying "credibility" in the industry and so on. how much is that really worth? not much today if you ask me but who am i to tell the label what price to charge for the sale of a feeling when the artist is willing to buy at that price?
Exactly. That's the issue, at what cost for the bold text. In regards to hip-hop or "urban" for that matter, the lack of true work major labels want to do. They want an artist to grind then trade all that work for their favor and not at favorable terms. Some people may feel like that trade may open doors. It is some truth to it but not 50% of anything profitable I do or creative control.
i feel like their favor is not worth much today but i also feel like diamonds aren't worth much. it won't stop them from being sold at high prices. I think it's pretty ironic coming from artists who have praised mantras of pimping and hustling and "can't knock the hustle" to then turn around and talk about exploitation...
People do not know how profitable that publishing is, especially if they make a sensational song where people making videos to it on YouTube. Plays on SoundCloud, Spotify, Pandora, etc. Pharrell's Happy making buku money because everyone and their momma gotta Happy video and/or cover. Usually, big stars get huge advances by selling a percentage of their publishing to publishing firms. I mention that because I am sure Pharrell sold some of his publishing to a publishing company.
That is serious irony. I feel the same way. Major labels' worth is their pseudo-oligopoly on commercial radio. No easier way for a record to simultaneously reach millions of consumers.

because fame is a currency as well. being famous gets you more groupie p*ssy, more status to "stunt", etc. for some people, that was the whole point to begin with.

Labels rarely offer money, especially big money to unknown acts
They expect you to do what labels used to be good for (making an artist hot) and then come along and give u some up front money to share the revenue the artist coulda made without them
