I'll take note of the family pics thing. And i came into the unit and made a point to work hard, and some other officers starting fcking with me like "We see you working hard staying late, you slowly winning me over" I wanted to make that impression.

But in my department, some higher ups are kinda making it difficult for me to progress in learning my job, bc they have to train me. I been under them, trying to learn, but they play that card like "Ok you been getting field experience, coming to us for help, but you just not ready to advance on XYZ"

It got me feeling some type of way, bc so far ive been playing the game, stroking these old ass cacs egos, asking them questions trying to learn my job ( as i should)

It just feels like they're withholding information, passing time, and in a few months they can say "Well, he didnt meet the deadline to get this qualification, we shouldve known his black ass was a bum, welp we cant promote him" Then ima be assed out.

That’s because they probably are. You gotta play a game with them to get on thier good side. All you gotta do is show fake interest in something they hold dear....it’s always any one of three things: thier dog, thier truck, thier fishing boat. When you need to get info from them, just start out with “ hey, I’m thinking of getting a dog...what kind do you have and what do you recommend?” That will open the cac floodgates and they will be more open to share information about your job after the discussion. Remember, those fukers like to talk about those things in particular outside of Trump, adolescent boys, and pre-teen Asian girls.

Talk about dogs like someone else wrote.

Avoid too many "happy hours" (more than 4 people and/or two+ different teams). Most people who regularly attend a lot these are lames and part of the company cult and want you to buy in to their clique. Go just enough where they will want to impress you but not too much where they get nosy and line step (often do)

Also new technique I'm working on is having a personal excuse or two on deck. If you don't have a dog tell them you do or say you live with one. if you ever need a day off for interviews you can blame the dog instead of being sick constantly.

Always make yourself look good Infront of them, not to impress but to cover your ass and come off as a better person than them. Saying the right things to make myself look upstanding even though I’m not, not to brown nose but to build a buffer

My personal thing is, especially with women is I stand far enough back from them. If they impede on my space I back up or state how uncomfortable I am. Arms length, especially white women. Stay away from white women

A) performs at a similar level with a similar salary as you and B) is cool with upper management

Yeah a certain amount socialising will be needed in certain careers for any advancement. You don't want to isolate yourself. I'm in the film/effects business I do socialise a lot. I'm lucky in that a lot of the people here are corny so I can make enough effort with them by talking about very geeky stuff, which means I don't have to talk about personal stuff which is good as many of the cats here have no life outside of work.

But talking about movies and computer games. And they're all ears and onside.
