better question is who watches full playthroughs for help? you need somebody else to hold your hand the entire game?
It's become a form of entertainment. Which is why i agree with him. I'v seen groups of people sit and watch DOTA/LOL or whatever like they were watching the superbowl. That is a revenue stream that companies could be using. They underestimated the amount of goofy ass people who would actually sit and watch somebody else play an RPG.

YouTube streamers shouldn't be allowed to show more than 30-45 minutes of a game. Watching a full play through should be banned.

Can you expand on this breh? for a old nikka who doesn't follow tech as closely.

the only way a walkthrough, longplay, let's play, review etc is gonna hurt your pocket is if your game is trash. This dude is just being an a$$hole.

Infact they actually help games that people normally wouldn't of noticed and are good to actually get some sales. Fish needs to crawl in a fukking corner.

Pew does entire story videos.

Instead of having to go out and buy a game that you were thinking about, you could watch it. That's more common than yall think tbh.

I guarantee its a very, small, small percentage of ppl who actually sit and watch all 10+ hours of a game. And you have no proof that these walkthroughs affect game sales. I have never in life heard someone say "I'm not copping TLOU. I watched peepee lou pou play the whole game so I am good."

That guy doesn't know what he's talking about. In fact it's the EXACT OPPOSITE. The walkthroughs convince more people to go and buy the game and experience it for themselves than it does deterring them from buying. The people who didn't buy after seeing the video 10 times out of 10 wouldn't have bought it if they didn't see it.

Also this guy doesn't have a point because his beef shouldn't be with developers but with the gaming studio he works for. Initially youtube wouldn't allow ppl to monetize gaming videos because it was copyright infringement. Then these things called MULTI-CHANNEL NETWORKS [MCN] were created as 3rd party intermediaries between youtube and copyright holders such as gaming studios to license the use of their content. The MCN's have contracts with gaming studios that allows youtubers to monetize the videos. Therefore the studios are either getting paid by the MCN OR the gaming studios realize the benefit of having youtubers with large followings to play their games.
@marcuz
The ad revenue that these videos see gets split up in three ways to the MCN, Google/youtube, and the "youtuber"

Phil Fish better keep his mouth shut unless he wants to shut down a tremendous FREE marketing service for indies. There's a reason companies like Activision and other titans aren't shutting down these streams and Nintendo ended up changing their policy towards streaming. Marketing is expensive. Go ahead and shut down a free avenue to reach millions of people if you want to. There will be some developer who is smart enough to look at it for what it is, which is free promotion.

For the people supporting this be mindful as it can get much worse if developers start getting a cut of that YouTube revenue. There are channels where people do covers of songs, play guitar, keyboards, video game music, FAQs for products etc. Should those developers and manufacturers get a cut too?

Cover songs aren't monetized that's why you don't see ads on them. The people that do covers on youtube don't make any direct money from youtube. IF they make money they're just leveraging the views to have viewers purchase something from them like apparel. Or they have some personal website that they try and parlay the youtube views towards.

Record labels would be smart in partnering up with MCN's to allow covers to be monetized and having the MCN's break them off the ad money.

Record labels are stupid for trying to shut down pirating, its just free promotion, if its good it will sell. People just dont understand its going over their heads. In fact I think its helping the labels.

:what:

THIS is your argument breh? You are a pretty smart individual, but how are you comparing the two? Someone covering a song in its entirety takes a lot more effort than it does me grabbing my controller, playing the game and going through it. It is nowhere near the same IMO.

Plus, you also have to consider that a song in the grand scheme of things is $1...and the experience is over in usually less than 5 minutes.

A full game however costs $60 apiece...AND sometimes costs HUNDREDS OF MILLIONS of dollars to create. Someone playing a story driven game such as Max Payne 3 in its entirety without talking much just gave away a "viewing" and actually PROFITING from it.

How are gamers hurt by youtubers? If you want to experience it yourself than simple don't watch the video.
Im not a gamer at all, I used to love watching my older brother play video games [RPG's] when I was younger. Im not really good at games and never cared to be good at them but I just liked watching someone else progress through the storyline. Im sure there are others like me. I watch gamers on twitch and also youtubers.

Mind you the ppl viewing these gamers play the games watch for more than just watching the game. The top youtube gamers are personalities, ppl just like listening to them for entertainment and do it while watching them play the game.

Its pretty simple really. Look how many studios have closed down in the last five years. People just dont get how fragile the gaming market is currently. Have you looked at release schedules? Dry as a bone.

Studios need to be cut into the revenue. Gamers are hurt because that money is being taken out of developers pockets and into some idiot youtubers pocket. Less money going to studios means less games being made.

You people can't see the forest for the trees.

Keep wondering why all we see is fps games and sequels. Studios are dying on their feet.
