Why does Jay-Z have 12 platinum albums, and 50/nelly/DMX can only sell albums to close friends?

I think it can be a lil bit of both. I think we can safely say that the reason Jay is still relevant is because he's both extremely talented AND a dikk riding fakkit. Then again there are other rappers doing exactly what Jay does and yet they only see a fraction of the success.

He's rap's Tim Duncan. A great player who managed to always keep himself surrounded with good people.

Jay made some hot catchy singles. Jumped on watever wave that was hot to stay relevant. While dropping quality music of his own. He also bagged beyonce so that'll keep him in those gossip convos plus snatch up that fan base. After ether he kept doin music. He stopped throwin direct shots and instead went back to throwin subliminals. So battlin wouldn't have that much of a effect on his career. When 50 started buzzin he pulled the fake retirement so the fans will beg for another album. Since the black album he's dropped some mediocre shyt with hot singles. Or songs that have single potential. Proclaimed himself best rapper alive so everybody believed it. He's been very strategic with every move he makes.

He's an excellent rapper, songwriter and marketing genius. So he has all three things necessary to sell a record.
He may not have that 50 Cent one in a million story + timing combo that 50 had on GRODT which is why fif sold more on that album than Jay ever has on any single record

Firstly he's significantly more talented than 50 and Nelly. Secondly its obvious why its always better to be the drug dealer than the drug user(DMX). But the most important reason is he is the best ever at riding that fine line where he still is respected by hardcore hip hop fans, but still keeps hold of the mainstream audience. At the end of the day, its all about the music. Even on his bad albums, like BP2, he still manages to get a record or two that is hugely popular and in constant rotation, like Excuse Me Miss for example.
