Why do you say he has "no depth"

His songs don't feature complex characters or their mentalities instead his characters tend to be unidimensional, his stories don't paint a picture with names, locations, and events that could only come from someone pulling from their experiences.....they're more like straight to TV sequels to early 90s hood films set in LA

Tell Flex to drop a bomb on this shyt
So many bombs, ring the alarm, like Vietnam on this shyt
So many bombs, make Farrakhan think that Saddam in this bytch

I'm Makaveli's offspring, I'm the King of New York
King of the Coast; one hand, I juggle them both

The juggernaut's all in your jugular, you take me for jokes
Live in the basement, church pews, and funeral faces
Cartier bracelets for my women friends, I'm in Vegas
Who the fukk y'all thought it's supposed to be?
If Phil Jackson came back, still no coaching me
I'm uncoachable, I'm unsociable;

Gobble dikk up 'til you hiccup, my big homie Kurupt

I've seen nikkas transform, like villain Decepticons
Mollies'll probably turn these nikkas to fukkin' Lindsay Lohan

You plan on stumping me?

Kendrick Lamar isn't fake deep to me; he's just a man who seems to have a elementary understanding on black issues, but, because he has a platform, he has license to be dramatic about it.

I believe he's sincere (I put J. Cole in the same box), but, dude obviously needs to learn more.

Fake Deep is a prerogative, BTM

Jayz ballad of a fallen soldier is the definition of fake deep

Listen to jay breaking down nas on blueprint

I wanted to dip on this because this is a long thread, but, these are great points.

@4d 6f 6e 65 79  U better mention that line in Charged Up and that bullshyt Instagram post.

You can actually read the lyrics now though

Half of his verse makes absolutely no sense

The only thing that stands out is that he called his contemporaries by name, but he didn't even say anything significant when he did

No. It was fair game.

Nas has a history of trying to be this hood sage while wavering between consciousness. Its low-key insulting.

Its the same dudes who buy into all these bullshyt conspiracies but don't understand anything beyond that.

Don't get it twisted...a lot of rappers are fukking idiots. They can make catchy shyt, but they're not the brightest dudes. They always catch hell when they open their mouths outside of a recording booth.

Thats the same reason J Cole has fans. His music is wack but people buy into his whole "college educated" BS and think that listening to him makes them by proxy "more esteemed and refined" listeners.

Conscious rap music, most of which sucks by most fairly objective standards (if we can ever approach such a thing), is favored by people who will trade in music quality for music message in order to secure favor from their peers as being a moral authority.

The white community does not do this, by the way. Death metal fans can also be school teachers and community leaders and scholars.

The fukked-up state of the black community means that all of our media has to be completely upstanding in the eyes of the mainstream to get any acclaim from gate holding critics.

Thats the thing. Thats how they're marketed.

Look at Kendrick's fan base.

Its overwhelmingly white.

Thats because they view him as a post-racial social savant...he's not a threat to them.

Your making some damn good points and astute observations. Wish you were this critical of ya boy. :mjpls:

It felt forced/contrived as an excuse for fantasy violence bars to me /shrug

Oh, I just figured it was him talking about what it would take for someone to kill, and how that goes against what he claims to stand for

"Take his gratitude from him, I bet he'll show you something"

Deep is delving further into a topic further then average person knows to go so Fake Deep is when your Trying to be Deep on a topic but your having surface level discussions about said topic. it varies from topic to topic...

its like if I'm a rapper and constantly make songs about the government being corrupt but I don't give you any facts, names, dates, explanations or compelling arguments or solutions just say ''THE GOV OUT TO GET US ILLUMINANTI!!'' :CrazyCass:Without Giving You Details and being extremely Vague While I'm At It

I'm just mentioning surface level stuff to give the gullible listener the impression I'm saying something SOOOO profound when I'm not
kanye does this alot

And Hopsin Does too :scust:

I mean lol. Its kinda like when people yell out ''RACISM!!'' ''SYSTEMITIC RACISM!!!'' :CrazyCass:

Which does exist, But you Can't Break Down or Explain The System or how it works :NahSon:
Heres the thing...Even Kanye isn't REALLY "Fake deep"...you can tell he sticks to what he knows. He's not trying to be OVERT with it.

The way Ye does "New Slaves" and hell...most of Yeezus is an example of this.

See they'll confuse us with some bullshyt
Like the New World Order
Meanwhile the DEA
Teamed up with the CCA
They tryna lock nikkas up
They tryna make new slaves
See that's that privately owned prison
Get your piece today
They prolly all in the Hamptons
Braggin' 'bout what they made
fukk you and your Hampton house
I'll fukk your Hampton spouse
Came on her Hampton blouse
And in her Hampton mouth
Y'all 'bout to turn shyt up
I'm 'bout to tear shyt down
I'm 'bout to air shyt out
Now what the fukk they gon' say now?

That verse is cold. as. FU¢K!

The execution on it is just raw. Its not beating you over the head with the topic....it forces you to know what the DEA is. It forces you to know what the CCA is. It forces you to infer why they'd be in the Hamptons.

Its sheer skill.

Kendrick would would probably just SAY all this shyt cause he doesn't know how to write better.

Apprently you're not alone. I see them as different but others see them as the same, so whatever.

"Fake deep" seems to be coli code for "what they're saying inst new, they didn't go into dissertation mode so obviously they don't know what they're talking about and they're trying to sound smart" hater shyt

Smart dumb IMO is a person who does the knowledge on something but then applies it stupidly. The example I gave was reading a book on times the government has shafted citizens, so therefore you think the smart move is taking all your money out the bank and keeping all your cash in the house. Smart dumb shyt right there

To me those terms mean you are:

a) trying to pass half truths as the truth
b) saying some obvious shyt thinking it's completely new information no one ever thought of
c) making an effort to sound deep/smart but you're really sounding stupid or just not making sense at all

Oh okay

So you mean like when drake said

Cops are killing people with their arms up
And your main focus is tryna harm us?

On charged up that was fake deep right?
Well actually. Its not fake deep.

its the execution.

He's saying..."Meek are you focused on this shyt? Really? This is whats important to you? Well lemme go in on this beef"

Its a single bar in the song. And drake barely does that shyt so you can tell he was irked by it.

Theres a style component you all who are opposing me seem to be severely lacking. Swagger is just as important to the verse as the lyrics themselves.

Execution is the key ingredient.

Theres a difference between reading the verse and hearing it.

This is music we're talking about

You can read a Pac verse and still not understand the complete musical picture.

Joey Badass fits the definition to me...not that he's a bad kid. He just sounds so "surface" to me...surface "dope bars" rapper. An entry-level conscious lyricist with some light ass rap patterns for somebody in 2017. His rhyme structure...content, etc. He can rap, it's just all aight to me. Even the depth.
This is my beef with Kendrick for about 60% of his songs. Cole too.

And yes, Badass.

he's trying TOO hard.

That lil uzi vert song is awesome. But it can easily be defined as fake deep.
Well thats the thing...he went in the studio and ranted about his relationship with his girlfriend and an emotional interaction they shared.

Thats truly powerful.

Him saying "I don't care if you really cry" and her saying "all my friends are dead" does WAY more to embody young love and angst than mere "saying we're in love and angsty"

You can tell who really knows how to WRITE and who reads a lot in these threads. Its like a lot of you all aren't truly scholars or do much critical reading analysis. ...and I don't mean fiction novels...I mean just any sort of analytic work whereby interpretation is central to the work you're doing.
