Same thing as labeling a gangster rapper a puccy/fraud/cb4

Someone who tries to market themselves or project an image of high intelligence and sincerity in regards to social issues, esp black social issues....but clearly they are either a mouthpiece for someoneelse's ideologies, only regurgitate what they've read without adding fine tuned personal commentary on it and or their views are very basic/surface level on these topics and if you actually challenge their viewpoints and try to scratch even just a little under the surface, you find nothing there

An example being talib kweli and him staunchly criticising the government and its system...but then proudly proclaiming he never votes, and then saying black people shouldn't vote because it doesn't do anything. Not voting is fine, but that's not a good enough reason not to vote imo and is moronic too.

J Cole is the worst offender of the new age rappers

Joey Badass has shown himself to be a dumbass on a couple of occassions too
what you're describing is smart dumb, which exists IMO, and is completely different from the dismissive "fake deep" comment....

i also find it funny how everyone is focusing on fake deep and ignored the other part of my OP which is show me what "real deep" is then :jbhmm:

i think kendrick talks about it in the way he's experienced it, no he wasn't the one banging or attending the weekly crip meeting at c-loc's house, but he has experiences that were shaped by it, he sees the effects, nothing wrong with speaking on it. dude never comes across as trying to be the authority on it IMO

I just don't see it with his music.
Why do you think Kendrick uses abstract rap and 3rd person characters so much in his raps?
Very rarely is he able to speak on any of this stuff in depth and almost never brings out any emotional appeals.

Fake deep to me is more like when stans try to convey meaning onto lyrics that the artist clearly didnt intend. They just stretch things to make there favorite artist sound more meaningful than they actually are.

Another meaning of fake deep is when the artist starts throwing out hot button subjects with vague context. Where you know if you pushed them more on the subject, there knowledge would be superficial. Its like when someone uses a word and you know they dont entirely know what that word means.
i agree that there's a layer of fans who do too much, but this term is primely applied to certain types of rappers in a derogatory way, people always posting the "not feeling the fake deep rhymes on ...." "fake deep nikka...." without talking about the fans, they're talking squarely about the artist. like every single thing the artist does gets dismissed as fake deep? i dont get it

what's wrong with 3rd person storytelling? should he adopt the stories as his own and build a persona like rick ross? i can't answer the depth thing as i'm not sure what you're looking for from him and on what subject matters...like are you looking for him to delve deep into gang politics, who's funkin with whom, etc? i disagree with emotional appeals, that's one of his strengths IMO

Yeah, if he is making a full album on subjects then at some point I want him to dive into these topics and provide me with personal anecdotes.

I don't want an album full of 3rd person characters with no real backstories committing terrible acts so Kendrick can add a line or two of hollow commentary about said actions. Why not listen to someone whose been through that give you the real mentality?

no it's not lol

the meanings behind two terms can overlap you know...its not as opaque as you're making it out to be

why is there all this mental gymnastics over a simple term?

Love Big L but Street struck was kinda fake deep for me, why because in the same album he was talking about even if my grandma violate she gotta go.
Maybe it's the bi polar nature of the Album that makes it so great 1 conscious song for 8 demonic songs.

because you need more than one side of the story...i personally identify with k dot's perspective, i grew up in oakland, hung with people who were heavy in the streets, got fiends, killers, and dealers in my fam...at the same time, outside of a few fights, parties, and smokin, i wasn't heavy in that shyt - i had plans. that doesn't mean i can't tell you about about the lifestyle, offer perspective on how things turn out, how it affects others. you want first person accounts, go listen to the rappers who are going to talk about their day to day life banging. you want critique, that's where a dude like kendrick comes in.

Orca's c*nt
Which is PRECISELY why everyone I know with several degrees, professional careers, etc doesn't listen to all that hifalutin shyt.

WE/THEY know more than these rappers who mostly are high school graduates trying to talk about complex world and social issues. Some 20 year old talking about surface level understanding of these ideas isn't gonna cut it.

Thats why this song works:

and why this song doesn't work:

Compare the two.

Chainz/Gucci/Ross is talking about community investment...on a dope beat with slick slang and visuals...and Immortal Technique is out here trying to practice slam poetry on a shytty instrumental. And even worse, ImmTech is trying to shove something down your throat. He'd be better off writing a blog post. No one wants to listen to that shyt.

Then on the other hand you have J Cole, who is so-so with the lyrics. And then you have Killer Mike...a college educated dude who knows how to talk about shyt in a dope way. Only problem is that he's wasting his prime years chasing white cross-over audiences :snoop:

Fact is, music always has been what matters. Not content.

People have other ways of consuming content.

How many years you spent memorizing shyt old white dudes tell you doesn't equal intelligence. Killer Mike is very intelligent. He went to Morehouse for one year and then dropped out though. A lot of people have graduated from college and are complete idiots. A lot of people have dropped out of college and are extremely intelligent; and vice versa.

Carry on.

there are no mental gymnastics, i see them as two different things. fake deep seems to be someone who apparently doesn't know everything about every subject they bring up, smart dumb nikkas are the people who'll read some shyt about the government being untrustworthy and flip that into some dumb action like keeping all their cash in the house cuz they don't trust banks.
