because you need more than one side of the story...i personally identify with k dot's perspective, i grew up in oakland, hung with people who were heavy in the streets, got fiends, killers, and dealers in my fam...at the same time, outside of a few fights, parties, and smokin, i wasn't heavy in that shyt - i had plans. that doesn't mean i can't tell you about about the lifestyle, offer perspective on how things turn out, how it affects others. you want first person accounts, go listen to the rappers who are going to talk about their day to day life banging. you want critique, that's where a dude like kendrick comes in.

I think what Poitier's getting at is that the critique itself is often framed in ways that suggest Kendrick is not as cognizant/understanding of the issues as he himself implies.

Why do you think gangbangers cant offer critiques of their own lifestyles?
Why do you think dopedealers cant offer critiques of their own lifestyles?
If anyone is fit to critique said lifestyle, its the person living it and know they're living foul.

I feel like a lot of the people that accuse rappers of being "fake deep" have a super linear and rigid point of view towards music and thats corny

At the end of the day these are artists/poets. You can't box them in and say "unless your an expert on this subject you can't rap about it". You gotta give every artist their own individual context Nas is a thoughtful 9th grade drop out who grew up on 70s and 80s black culture. Kendrick a "good kid" who came from 90s gang culture, Rza is a dusthead informed by Islam and Kung Fu movies etc etc.

Fact checking rappers is the dumbest thing you can do and completely misses the point of hip hop.

KRS was an uneducated homeless kid sleeping on trains but when he started rhyming he became "The Teacher". If he sounds like a crazy street preacher at times...GOOD. Thats his voice.

If you can't respect that your whole perspective is wack...

Nah he's very cognizant of both his enviroment and where he himself factors in. Thats what songs like M.a.a.d City show.

they certainly can, i'm just saying a dude like kendrick it's mainly going to be critique or recounting of "i know someone" stories...it's not going to be "when i pulled the trigger". i'm not seeing why it's an issue for someone who isn't a gangbanger to talk about his experiences with it - it's not like it didn't affect him just because he chose not to be a member.

Listen to Maad City then listen to Versace rap......same subject told through the same lense but one is entirely cartooney.

I noticed the people who love fake deep rapper are fake deep people... the people who identify with the fake deepness casue they never lived any of the real shyt either...
this doesn't even make sense, especially since most people apply it to those who bring up social, political, or religious issues. what does that have to do with "living real shyt"?

I always see this thrown out about dudes like kendrick, lupe, joey badass, sometime cole – basically anyone coined as creating songs "with meaning" or "depth" yet i never see anyone explain what makes them fake deep nor does anyone offer examples of who/what is "real deep" :jbhmm:

Can someone post some examples of "fake deep" verses vs. "real deep" verses for me? Can I get the coli official list of "fake deep" artists and "real deep" artists? :jbhmm:

Fake deep usually means superficial display of knowledge or completing in-depth thought.
Perfect example is Common, this is a man who likes to talk the talk of racism in America, but then got on stage and said racism would end if black people embraced white people.
