I won't even say it's ALL race, but in Indianapolis, it's got a WHOLE LOT to do with it. Tickets are cheap as hell. I'd go to every game but Im 3 hrs away.
but lets be real for a minute.
is it REALLY racist if white ppl don't watch basketball because its majority black?
or is it similar to how alot of blacks don't watch shows like seinfeld and friends because its majority white?
Rename them the Naptown Pacers and move the arena to Haughville

When the NBA started to become more and more dominated by blacks, and with the emergence of the great white hope (Peyton Manning), the white folks in Indianaapolis were looking for reasons to justify them turning their backs on the Pacers.
Let's not forget, they hated Reggie's black guts because they drafted him instead of that white boy.

It's not necessarily racism, but it's still race related. If they said they dont watch basketball, that's one thing. Prep games get crazy attendance, there are some serious hoops fans in Nap. They just happen to despise the NBA, and I think it's got a lot to do with it being DOMINATED by blacks. The high schools are the last levels that white kids in Nap get to participate.
Put it like this, Mike Conley, Zach Randolph and Greg Oden all played in Nap or very nearby. If they all played for the Pacers, it wouldn't affect their attendance.

Breh support the Chicago Bulls. Don't take that. Chicago is a real sports town. You'll never hear any cac refer to the bulls as thugs in Illinois![]()

I don't agree with this, people were begging for the Pacers to sign Eric Gordon to help draw more attendance. Now I don't think it would have worked how they were hoping but it would definitely gave a bump. Even signing George Hill who's from Indy caused a mild interest boost. The People here love the hometown kids regardless of color and they would root for them. Signing Greg Oden for cheap actually would be a great idea IMO to draw more attention.
When the Pacers were competing and going to the ECF/Finals and had the best record in the league with majority black starters they were selling out home games and had one of the best atmospheres in the league. The Pacers attendance decline was a variety of issues and timing coming together.
whats the excuse for teams like Detroit, Atlanta, Philly and Washington having poor attendance then??
sure indianapolis is a pretty white city, but those other cities aint. Why aren't all the black "fans" there supporting those teams??
Cacs huh?

While theyres some of that probably can someone explain to me why its ok that black people dont like the nhl because they have nobody to identify with but if white peoople dont like the nba for that reason their card carrying klansmen?
Whast the difference? Just because people want to watch a sport with players they can identify with doesnt automatically make them bigots
you can even throw in Cleveland and New Orleans in to the bottom 10 of NBA attendance...and neither of those teams would be consider "white" cities
maybe there are more factors involved.......
Off topic but with race in mind shouldnt hockey be huge in the south and mid west places like Indy ?

Front runners that wants to be a part of something. This is why the NFL is becoming lame. Claiming to be an NFL fan is a status symbol and the be all end all of sports. It's ridiculous.I was born and raised in Indianapolis, when they were selling out Market Square Arena with Reggie, The Davis Brothers, Mark Jackson, Travis Best, Jalen Rose.....so this isn't about the city not supporting black players.
It's just in the last few years Indianapolis has become a HUGE football city. Peyton Manning and the Colts took over the city, got a new stadium built, got the superbowl to come to the city. At the same time the Pacers had the worst stretch of their existence .
Indiana is a small state and market, but the Indianapolis Area (2 hours in any direction) there are TONS of sports options, Indiana/Purdue/Butler/Notre Dame , The Colts and Pacers...the Pacers picked a bad time to self destruct in a somewhat fickle market with other alternatives when you're not doing well. People just stopped attending Pacers games and took their business elsewhere
Plus the Pacers were destroyed in one of the most ratchet moments in Sports history, during that time Jamal Tinsley and Stephen Jackson were shooting up clubs, but the year before when they were 61-21 they were selling out with Black Players starting
But the brawl plus the last few years of losing really drove away people. I admit these cacs do cac but they support black players and teams, Hell the Colts with Harrison, Wayne, Freeney, Mathis, even Bob Sanders these guys are legends in Nap
Basically as someone from the town I don't think it's about race as much as people are painting it out to be in here
