'mark' was his word, not mine....that was his way of saying it wasnt hot...

just like i said to him: you comparing albums from artists that had backing (the wu name/albums, dr dre name/album) to his debut album to say he 'was just another rapper and the album wasnt hot' lol...aight man...

as for that' hit' comment: that's what others have been saying, not me...they were saying it wasnt a hit/hot based off sales...i said: when it dropped, cats in my city and that came to my city from out of town were bumping it....also, people in my school were doing what you said when the album dropped....that's why i said the album was 'hot', and disagree with future....

Your experience =/= reality. The vast majority of people in this thread heard Future and :manny: "he's right". So should we listen to the majority, or you?I heard the album in 1996 too but I'm not gonna sit here like it was widely known or talked about because my circle had it. I had Volume 10's debut album too, it don't really mean much.

And I'm not comparing anything, I'll telling you what happened. If a discussion occurred....and people were talking about BONE, Wu, Outkast, Nas, Pac, BIG....Jay? People would be like "who is Jay-Z?"
You can give reasons for that like "well, he didn't have the backing of those other guys" but the end result is still the same.

I don't know what any of this has to do with what I said.

Because you're saying the quality of the album was evident which is all fine and well but means absolutely nothing if people don't care enough to listen to it.
illmatic had a commercial impact :jbhmm:?

He said "critically or commercially". Nas was getting compared to Rakim, so yeah. It would be like if you were fresh out of HS getting compared to Jordan.

whose talking about classic?...future said the album wasnt 'hot'....unless you saying the only way an album is hot is if it's classic, then that's 2 different things....

and that is exactly what people are saying by saying the album wasnt 'hot', 'didnt make an impact', 'didnt make a mark', etc....they acting like the album got no play outside of a small circle lol....
I can agree with that. I was initally basing my post off a few post who was saying it was a classic when it dropped.

But im a be real, i just feel like if ur nose wasnt into hip heavy at the time, rd was under radar. Casuals aint really know jay until hard knock life outside of the east coast.

And are u from the carolinas breh? I ask cause i know their radio played more ny shyt at the time than other southern spots.

Neither was illmatic...

:sas2:

To be fair, Illmatic wasn't what was popular out here either. Doggystyle was still extremely popular out here by the time Illmatic came out and Deathrow music eclipsed all that, generally speaking. Cypress Hill, Snoop, Cube, Quik were all much more popular artists/groups out here.

Not saying that means anything other than it wasn't popular in Los Angeles :yeshrug:

Well as time has clearly revealed, ENOUGH people listened and ENOUGH people got it. My only point here was to refute the sentiments that nobody listened or got it until he "convinced" people years later. Mainstream slept and didn't catch on till later, but the real heads got it from the door.

But that is the truth....that album was sought after years later....you can claim the "real" heads got it from the door but even that is bullshyt...

I kinda wish Nas vs Jay never battled because any observation is going to seem like it's biased for or against one of them. :mjlol:

But he's right though. People were talking about Nas is the next Rakim. Nobody was really talking about Jay in any capacity. He was just another random guy with an album out at the time.

I was just trying to instigate

Why, what, who are you contradicting, that's all I want to know?
Who are you responding to, what are you refuting, what is the logic/intent behind your statements?
I've never seen a bigger non point in my life than this, it's completely fukking aimless.

Jay doesn't believe music has any color and actively encourages racial crossover.
I value his perspective as a content creator more.

His first album? Yeah..That's right. He didn't blow up until the second album with Hard Knock Life and the Rush Hour song "Can I Get A"

No it isn't, people constantly try to shyt on Jay with this narrative, no Jedi Mind Tricks took place to convince people Reasonable Doubt is a good album.

This always hurts Jay z fans..
1996 everyone was listening to Biggie, Nas, Pac, Fugees, Wu Tang, Death Row, Busta Rhymes, Coolio, Too Short, E-40 etc Jay Z was not relevant :yeshrug:
Westside Connection was going strong too..Bow down was getting majorly played. "Gangsta make the world go round".
