-lol @ dude trying to say that brandy's 1st big hit was "the boy is mine". im f**kin done.

-aalyiah's album sales for her 3rd joint(i cant even remember the name of it) were indeed dissappointing. THERE WAS TALK OF THIS BACK THEN. DONT LET THE SALES-SPIKE NUMBERS 1ST WEEK NUMBERS FOOL YOU. and even with the sales-spike, she still wouldnt have sold near the amount of the 1st 2 joints if she hadnt died. dude said it all when he posted the numbers from the week of her death. thanks for proving my point lil buddy.

-lol @ dude saying monica's album in '03 wasnt popular. fugg outta here. it was more popular than aalyiah's last chit, at least until she died.

-and monica is still poppin til this day, whereas aaliyah would be forced to make pop music to stay "relevant" just like usher.

-to the other dude, monica was a bit more mainstream than aalyiah in the mix of the '90s. monica was getting more love from events like soul train and she was getting nods at more mainstream events where aaliyah would barely get any(if at all) like the AMAs, grammys, etc.

-the difference being that monica is a legit singer and brandy was a good enough vocalist. aalyiah was moreso a studio gangster. most of what im saying is stuff that was understood.

-so even if aalyiah outsold monica(if thats even true), then sure as hell nobody noticed. its just like with rap. its all about sales. my dudes D.R.S. outsold alot of niccas and they had no type of footing when it comes to status in the game.
-i find it funny how the same people that are trying to prop aalyiah up to new levels are some of the same folks that are always wondering "what happened to mainstream r&b"? nicca YOU happened. lol.

That's just speculation unless there's proof that her label actually had higher expectations. Aaliyah's previous album was a slow seller.

What Aaliyah could've, should've, or would've been if she were still here is all speculation.

Aaliyah's impact was acknowledged while she was alive and she was considered a legitimate singer even if she wasn't an elite vocalist.

Too many Beyonce dikkriders in here lol..

Beyonce was the better singer, but Aaliyah was a better dancer and a better actress with better music, not to mention she had a much prettier face.

The only reason why Beyonce was bigger is for these reasons:
A) She came from Destiny's Child (She already had hype to fall back on)
B) Jay-z co-sign
C) Lack of competition in the r n b field (Aaliyah had to compete with JAnet, LAuryn Hill, Brandy, TLC, Toni Braxton, MAriah Carey, and so on)
E) She's been in the game longer than Aaliyah. Combined with Destiny's Child, she's been singing for over +15 years. Aaliyah died and she wasnt even in the game for a decade.
D) She makes generic microwave commercial music, as compared to Aaliyah who didn't chase after hits. She took risks with her music and sung on beats that no one else was doing at the time

What status is Monica though? She's a flop with nothing to brag about. She won no awards, no strong album sales, no magazine covers, lol she didn't even get her own movie. Both Brandy and Aaliyah outsold her. Monica was always dead last in terms of sucess. nikkas need to stop talking reckless without looking up facts lmao

This is one of the weirdest threads ever BTW.

Everybody gettin' thrown under the bus in Aaliyah's memory is crazy... she was def. dope, and the One In A Million album was greatness, but good gotdamn.

This whole 'men listened to Aaliyah, don't no dudes listen to Beyonce' is 1) a non-factor when it comes to talent, and 2) not really all that true. Sure, we liked a lot of her songs, but let's not act like nikkas were ridin' around bumpin' Aaliyah songs like crazy. Her fanbase was LARGELY female, just like Beyonce's is. I ain't about to bump no "If I Was A Boy" either, but I don't think that's the point...

And Aaliyah was a star because she was a total package, but let's not start talkin' like she was some incredible vocalist. She was good, she was a good performer, she had a good look, catchy songs, and great beats. She was definitely a standout... but if you don't think Beyonce could sing her under a table, y'all got wax buildup in your ears from the '90s that might need to get washed out.

The fucc I care if Bey could "sing someobdy under a table"? I wanna hear some cold-ass cuts. There's a whole bunch of singers that had great voices that nobody gives a damn about today...

And niccas were ridin' around bumpin' Aaliyah cuts! The muthafuccin' intro "Beats 4 Da Streets"? That chit right thurr? We was bumpin' the fucc outta that lol! Aaliyah's chit was subbin', my nicca...

Most ppl in here defending Aaliyah have said exactly what u saying...so I don't get why u felt the need to post this. No one said Beyonce couldn't blow the house down or that Aaliyah was a better singer, get the wax out your eyes

Monica had one of the biggest songs of all time (The Boy is Mine) And her album only sold a modest 2 million copies.. Aaliyah sold that SAME amount with NO major hit single & Brandy had the same damn song and her album sold 5 million +.... That speaks volumes..
