It sounds to me like the dishwasher was started and there were dirty dishes in the sink that could have been added. I can understand not wanting to run a nearly empty dishwasher but no one should have to load someone else' dirty dishes. Rinse them out and put them in the dish washer. When the dishwasher is full, run it.

Naaah the dishwasher was full too. So i turned it on so the dishes from the sink could be put into the washer later... but i guess that's just too much common sense
