Wait, he won 13 games last year, and hasn't had a losing season. Last .500 season was in 2013. Since then, his team has won at least 10 games.
Hot seat?
They have the offensive weapons. Defensively is where the work is needed.
SP is far from perfect, but with the defense they’ve had for much of the past 6-7 years, nobody should expect much. In 2012 they finished last in yards and 31st in points allowed. 2014 they finished 28th in points and 31st in yards. 2015 they were 31st in yards and last in points. 2016 they were 27th in yards and 31st in points. Let’s not forget they were fined an entire draft class basically when goodell tried to make it look like he cared about player safety by railroading the saints for something it turns out they weren’t doing, not to mention all the bad deals their GM made. I think a few years ago as much as 21-22% of their cap was committed to dead money. Hard for anyone to win under those circumstances.
Still a huge blow losing a first and second round pick. A lot of coaches really only have expertise on one side of the ball. Plenty of them stick to one side of the ball and leave the other to their coordinatorsthat's not true. they lost their 1st and 2nd round picks.
anyway, it's the head coach's job to field a team that's good in all 3 phases. otherwise why not just be an OC?
. Some even leave both sides up to them
. It’s rare you see a head coach that’s really involved in two sides of the ball, let alone 3.Payton being suspended for a year didn't help. Came back to an old squad in 2013. They had a solid year with a good defense. They tried to upgrade it and it blew up in their face. The Oline feel apart due to age. They invested in Diva that caused the locker to go rotten. They had rebuild in 2015 and 2016 after letdown of 2014. Which led to some amazing changes. Scouting department getting completely wiped out. Then, after 2016 the complete defensive staff and special team staff got wiped out. Also, the 2016 squad was actually pretty decent. Special team blunders cost them about 5 games. Saints didn't came out of nowhere in 2017. They been building up a great squad for a minute.Still a huge blow losing a first and second round pick. Lovie got hosed. 10-6 but they missed the playoffsi get that about expertise, but it's still the head coach's job to make sure things are tight on both sides. Lovie Smith got fired from the Bears even though his Ds were nice. He couldn't get the O to match the D.
