I hadn't spoke on it yet but we did go see 'Bring Her Back' this weekend and to be honest, we left with a lot of questions. First, I'll get into the good. I thought the acting was really good, we both did. They had to carry some emotional scenes and they hit. There was some nice cinematography as well and some scenes were pretty sick, disgusting, in a good way. Looked like some great practical effects.

The outline of the story wasn't an issue. We enjoyed the concept. But after about an hour or so, we needed to see a little bit more information on these plot lines. We've talked about this before, whatever rules a movie has, I'm good to go as long as they are explaining the rules and following them.

That's where I felt this movie came apart because a lot went unexplained and I truly don't think we missed anything.

How exactly do the sacrifices work? How do the transmissions work? Who was the kidnapped kid and why was he important? What's the deal with the "demon" or whatever it was and how was it summoned? What's it's purpose? You can piece some of these things together but not all. Also, where did the mother even get the tapes from to run with?

Not terrible but I think it could have been executed better...

They're kinda building out their own messed-up universe to connect these movies. They launched a weird website that exists in the Bring Her Back world.

I'm curious to see what stories the big-time fans piece together from all the weird clips and items on the site. The hand and the tapes for the resurrection ritual are fake listings on the site, along with a bunch of other interesting creepy stuff.

I think most aspects of the sacrifice process in the tapes, and some are discussed. The demon possesses a person; then it has to eat the body of the person who died (and the body has to be preserved). Next, the ritual requires a body of someone who died in the same manner for the demon to expel the soul into. At which point you get a "resurrection."

The kidnapped kid was one of her daughter's friends. He shows up in the birthday party video. It's implied that the lady straight up broke into his home to take him.

I've got nothing for the summoning/possession, though it'd make interesting territory for a sequel. I'm curious if revisiting the movie will have more hints than we realize, though. There's the eye thing, the circle motifs, and hunger...but Idk if it gets any further detail. It was definitely summoned for the purpose of being a conduit for the resurrection ritual.

The website is a bit of a cheap way around the item origin stories. But it gives us a firm answer at least. The occult black market is pumping out cursed objects and ritual tapes, and normies are called Those Who Glow (and it's heavily implied that the page is being surveilled, probably by the in-universe law enforcement).

:ohhh: Interesting stuff.... I'll definitely watch 'Bring Her Back' again at some point and I don't mind leaving things out if they are going to be explained at a later date but it does give the viewer a lot of homework to do. I'd have preferred a more straightforward approach within the film itself I suppose. Thanks for sharing this, I'm gonna dig around.

Shudder dropped a new horror movie in the genre of occult ritual horror. If you liked A Dark Song, then you might appreciate of The Surrender.

When the family patriarch dies, a grieving mother and daughter risk their lives to perform a brutal resurrection ritual and bring him back from the dead.

The trailer is actually not bad in terms of spoiling the big moments...it shows the core plot without ruining some pretty dope visuals. Let's do good and bad for this joint:

I liked:
The opening scene is absolutely striking. Literally one minute into this movie, I knew I had to sit through it and see where it was gonna take me. The Main Character is the woman from The Boys, and she acts her ass off.

While the plot's not anything new, it's reliable. A mother and daughter work with a cultist to try and resurrect the family patriarch. It's not as much of a slow burn as other ritual horror because we don't get too much backstory on the characters. The ritual and the way people are tested are the sellers for the story.

Finally, the visuals...there are some really horrific visuals in this movie. Some of the best I've seen all year. It didn't scare me plot-wise, but the visuals were really memorable and some of the situations would be terrifying to live through.

I didn't like:
Again, the characters aren't particularly developed. We get enough to understand their dynamics, but their backstories are fairly empty. The plot is literally just the ritual. So it's light on story.

While this isn't as slow as A Dark Song, it still starts slow before occultist arrives. It also does that annoying abrupt ending stuff that I've become accustomed to in these types of horror movie.

Bottom line:
I liked it. I didn't love it, but I enjoyed a lot of aspects. The visuals alone are worth the time to watch, and it's a memorable experience. 7 out of 10 for me...though, it might lose points as I see more horror that I enjoy. This year has been light on standout horror movies, so I feel like I've been grading on a curve lately. Still, I think this is worth a watch particularly for fans of stuff like A Dark Song, An Unquiet Grave, or Anything for Jackson.

Saw Martyrs for the first time yesterday. I had avoided it for years , but then realized I’ve seen some fukked up movies that didn’t really affect me, so I gave it a shot. I loved it :yeshrug:
Of all the movies in the "disturbing horror" list, I think Martyrs has the best story by a long shot. It's too cruel for me to revisit often, but there's a LOT to mull over and think about on rewatches.
