It was actually going to be a Public Enemy album. Literally. I know some back story to how this album came about and Chuck D’s people were lobbying for him to do the soundtrack but the negotiations fell apart.

But the way it came together with TDE is more progressive and current. This album has a legit pop smash and club bangers. I don’t think Public Enemy or even RTJ could have delivered that.

Chuck is a legend. But they made the right choice. He’ll always have that voice. And you know the message would have been on point. But his sound is dated. Let the new kids step up to the plate, take on the challenge and share a vision thats more likely to be embraced by today’s fans.

Woud've liked to have heard Damien Marley. Was listening to Tribal War today and thought the lyrics fit the theme of the movie around K'Naans verse. Kendrick did his thing tho..

Maybe I'm just eager for a Distant Relatives II

While they could have used African music, this is an American comic back made by Americans with a movie full of Americans. This is not an African movie even though we are appropriating the culture this is a black American movie. Also people expecting the soundtrack to a Disney superhero movie to be a public enemy album are dumb. By the way Kendrick already made that style of album y’all called it trash remember TPAB.
TPAB wasnt african Music. Jazz and funk are black American genres

Name another soundtrack doing these types of #'s these days :wow:

And the funny thing is that a couple soundtracks are out right now. The Greatest Showman has done well at the box office and its soundtrack sold well. But it took four weeks to get to #1, at which point it sold like 106k that week. It then spent two more weeks at #1.

Black Panther is now at its second week at #1. It's selling better than The Greatest Showman, and I wouldn't be stunned if it's #1 again next week. It's doing GOOD. If you don't like the album or Kendrick fine whatever. But the success cannot be denied.
