I'm back and forth with this show, it'll go from being slow to being intense out of nowhere, catching myself having to rewind the episodes to really lock in
It's written really, really well. Though I do admit it's a series, I think it would work better reading the novel. Since the animation can be fukking trash at times :russ:

But the mid-animation doesn't get in the way, so it works. If it even had solid production values, I'd reckon people would put it up right there with Apothecary Diaries.

You think there's overlap with the apothecary diaries crowd like that with action anime?

I don't think it's a clear overlap as Apothecary Diaries is a well-made mystery drama. It's more so how well they are written, as both take time to incorporate the cast to get you invested when the big moments happen. Then when those moments happen it is delivered extremely well. Kijin Gentōshō is technically an action series, but I would never recommend the anime if someone looking for action. The manga & novel I would though but that's different.

It more so is the point when a well-made series that has some top-notch directing and is well produced, it will get people's attention more than if it doesn't have those.

But how is someone gonna know it has those things until they already invested time? Too many shows come out to do multiple blind runs and hope that the show has worthwhile writing.

Obviously if you read the manga first then yea you'd know ahead of time it was worth it, I've read neither so I only ended up tapping in cuz I was bored and wanted to add something to the watchlist.

I was asking because I know a lot of people similarly wouldn't lock in to something like Apocalypse Hotel until they see an action clip like the one you posted a few weeks ago, it's a good show, but I personally feel like most action/adventure heads will skip over stuff like that in general even if the writing and whatnot is good because you can't tell that's gonna be the case from just a glance, everyone's not gonna wait and see if the writing pays off like that. The multiple crazy clips of yachi-YO! (:mjlol: )doing crazy shyt is what drew people in to discover the interesting plot.

Most action/adventure heads are conditioned to check for visual stimulation first and then hope good writing follows it, it's like being drawn to a book based off the cover art vs. just grabbing a blank book and hoping for the best

I wasn't expecting much writing wise from this demon shyt, originally tapped in for the action and just hoped the writing wasn't gonna be trash or I'd drop it :manny: it started off kind of episodic in feel so that's why I kinda tuned out some of the episodes and had to go back and rewatch once i noticed the author was actually tryna cook something up for real :cook:

Ultimately, word of mouth is always the big thing. For Apothecary Diaries it was one of those series that people most wanted to be adapted into an anime, so I figured to check it out. The first episode did an outstanding job in selling what the series would be like. But imo there will be some good anime that falls under the radar that people will miss. Orb was one of the best anime releases so far this year and people slept on it hard. Same with "Yatagarasu: The Raven Does Not Choose Its Master" from last year.

It's easy to waste time on mid and miss out on gems unfortunately with how the industry is now.

But good point on there being too much anime out there. Hell, even watching every episode 1 when there is anywhere from 40-60 seasonals in each season ain't happening. The main things I look at are manga rating, director's past work and studio's past work. Like with Apocalypse Hotel, I only checked it out because CyGames Pictures animated it, since they are one of the best studios in the industry right now.

Ultimately, you won't know unless you already invested time. Either reading the source material or trying out a few episodes. Honestly, even the 3 episode rule doesn't always work well with every show. Especially with stuff that is adapted from novels.

Yea tbh I'll check Reddit to see if they're going crazy over a show or check out the comments of anime reviewers and see if there's anything the fans been begging em to watch

Idk how I stumbled onto Daily life of the immortal king recently

Edit: Actually nevermind! I was on the YouTube channel that had all of the to be hero X PV's and they had the entire first season of some of their shows posted on there to watch for free :whew: you're right alot of times just follow the studios that make shyt you like and you can run into a lot of stuff

Disagree on the bolded. It was a good show but not close to level of Apothecary Diaries, the differences in quality are even more noticeable because they both tackled political/palace type of drama. Orb was also much better written and animated than Yatagarasu.

I mean my main point both being sleepers that they slept on that turned into great shows was my main point. Which is why we brought up Apocalypse Hotel.

Iirc you only finished the 1st arc of Yatagarasu and didn't continue beyond it. From episode 12 until it ended finished it strong. The direction was outstanding with some fantastic plot twists and reveals. For both it and Orb though the animation for both was just good enough. Although the fights of Oczy vs Nowak were great from Madhouse. Orb was better written if I had to say. Though there is a lot in Yatagarasu to still to come with how well it finished.

How Kusuriya & Yatagarasu tackled political drama were entirely different. As the protagonist being Maomao who enters the rear palace as the servant. While for Yatagarasu it is the Prince and with Yukiya serving as the role of learning the world. You are def underselling the world building in Yatagarasu. Between the 4 main areas of politics (North, West, South & East) with their motivations, the origins of the Yatagarasu, Weremonkeys & then to add the people in the underground compared to the more royalty types above. The reveal that the world the series is on is also a part of our own world and Nazukihiko's duties, including protecting their people, really added a lot.

I do find the character writing in Kusuriya to be better as the ending of S1 with Lakan to be truly outstanding, as well the stuff with Shisui as the season draws to its end in a few weeks. Also, a big part is the series has more entertaining characters because outside Yukiya & Nazukihiko banter, the conversations can be a bit dull. Which is why I would put Kusuriya over Yatagarasu.

Furthermore, at the end of the day, even if one show is a masterpiece and the 2nd series isn't as good, that should take away from the latter. It's like me saying the "Rascal Dreams Series" isn't that good because Monogatari exists and is a masterpiece.

Finished Once Upon a Witch's Death. A pretty good fantasy series. Good world building, lots of good themes regarding the value of life and a super solid cast that it built up well. It seems like it's only 1/2 of the series since it seems the story finishes in 4 volumes. I give 8/10.
