Why are black people against black names?

Because it's easier to sell your kid dreams of societal standards than teach them to navigate outside the box. I think most black parents want to make things as easy as they can for their children and some believe assimilating through looks (short/permed hair vs natural), names, and lifestyle are the best ways.

I don't knock them for it. Merely existing as a black person can be difficult to navigate and again, some just try to make it as easy as possible.

Extremely false names are rooted in the lexicon of the culture. A name like Brian and Jonathon probably meant something in old English

you can break down any name in any culture to it it’s root meaning if you understand said culture

i.e cleopatra for example a Greek meaning glory to the father. Cleo - glory to, patra - father or of the father

We can take this even 3 steps further with middle eastern names like Sarah, Michael, Benjamin, or any name rooted in Hebrew, Aramaic, or Arabic traditions.

what I’m saying really only makes sense is if you can speak a 2nd language then it’ll really dawn on you. Contemporary English is a b*stardize language so a lot of things get lost in translation

Honestly as long as your name has an origin or meaning behind it, it does not matter. Names should be a source of power and be the first start to define where your child goes in life. They should have meaning. Whether they be African, Arabic, Greek,etc. in origin i think they should mean something

Naming a kid a made up name with no meaning because you like the way it sounds or you're trying to be unique seems like you're shorting the kid on something that would help affirm their identity and they'd be able to take pride in. The made up names just for the sake of being made up like DaBrickashaw with no meaning behind them seem like a missed opportunity. Just my opinion

Names and words have meaning and something giving a means/definition gives it a certain types of power, the fact people in this thread can’t see it or say some shyt like all names or words are made up seem to not understand how culture can shape a civilization at its very core. Yep. My name is from a Greek root that means "maiden." When i was little, I'd look it up in name books like " That's it??!"

But when i learned classical Greek, come to find out, that's what they called the goddess Persephone (queen of the underworld) cuz they was too scared to call her name directly and maybe attract her attention.

Exactly there’s numerous Ted talks on this about the power of names and words and how they define history and help shaped certain cultures. I keep telling everyone your entire thought process changes the minute you are capable of speaking another language. Especially if you pick up an Asian, African, or middle eastern language. This is a real phenomenon that historians and linguists keep reviewing. Languages are the dna road map to the world you study a language and it’s history and you can see how it spread and evolved not only itself but also society.
