Because it's easier to sell your kid dreams of societal standards than teach them to navigate outside the box. I think most black parents want to make things as easy as they can for their children and some believe assimilating through looks (short/permed hair vs natural), names, and lifestyle are the best ways.

I don't knock them for it. Merely existing as a black person can be difficult to navigate and again, some just try to make it as easy as possible.
I knock them for it.

The cycle of scary samboism has to end at some point.

I'm glad my mother raised me to be a man and never to be ashamed of my own just because we are in close proximity with CACS.

You have sorta of a sambo mentality, but I'm sure you dont realize it.

Anyway, my mother also raised me in a way where I dont have to fill out applications and beg like a hoe:hubie:

And i say this as someone who doesn't have a "throw the app in the trash name"

It's bullshyt anyways. Names are gibberish anytime u come up with it. The fukk is a Brian? Wtf is a Johnathan? Lol. No different than a laquisha.
Extremely false names are rooted in the lexicon of the culture. A name like Brian and Jonathon probably meant something in old English

you can break down any name in any culture to it it’s root meaning if you understand said culture

i.e cleopatra for example a Greek meaning glory to the father. Cleo - glory to, patra - father or of the father

We can take this even 3 steps further with middle eastern names like Sarah, Michael, Benjamin, or any name rooted in Hebrew, Aramaic, or Arabic traditions.

what I’m saying really only makes sense is if you can speak a 2nd language then it’ll really dawn on you. Contemporary English is a b*stardize language so a lot of things get lost in translation

That started with his dad, who has been acting since the early 60's. You know if he came out as Ramon Estevez, instead of Martin Sheen, all of his roles would have been as street gang member #2:russ:. Emilio was the only one to say fukk that shyt. I'm using the name I was given:gucci:.
that one mexican that plays hector in every movie :mjlol:

i went to his imdb and was crying

Honestly as long as your name has an origin or meaning behind it, it does not matter. Names should be a source of power and be the first start to define where your child goes in life. They should have meaning. Whether they be African, Arabic, Greek, etc. in origin i think they should mean something

Naming a kid a made up name with no meaning because you like the way it sounds or you're trying to be unique seems like you're shorting the kid on something that would help affirm their identity and they'd be able to take pride in. The made up names just for the sake of being made up like DaBrickashaw with no meaning behind them seem like a missed opportunity. Just my opinion :yeshrug:

Names and words have meaning and something giving a means/definition gives it a certain types of power, the fact people in this thread can’t see it or say some shyt like all names or words are made up seem to not understand how culture can shape a civilization at its very core. There was a Ted talk on this exact topic that showcased it

and names dont need origin or meaning. thats stupid. a name is a name. you can create the meaning for it like they did thousands of years ago and run with it.

i can name my daughter some shyt like “Herueka” and say it means light bringer. thats what they did in the past so whats stopping me from doing that today?

A child being black in a white supremacy world is a bigger inconvenience than their damn name. But you’re Carribean so I already know how y’all get down.

nikka smd, a dumb name is a dumb name, everybody know's the bigger problem is white supremacy but why make it harder on your children. I've worked in schools and non profit's and have kid's named Sharmarlon end of the day it's not even a bootstrap argument, just don't name your fuc** kid Marijuana pepsi

Absolutely doesnt work like that. See my previous post as a person who can speak 3 other languages that’s not how lexicon works. There’s a reason things have been defined a certain way over time. That’s not for nothing

Yep. My name is from a Greek root that means "maiden." When i was little, I'd look it up in name books like ":rudy: That's it??!"

But when i learned classical Greek, come to find out, that's what they called the goddess Persephone (queen of the underworld) cuz they was too scared to call her name directly and maybe attract her attention. :demonic:

Made me feel a lot better, ngl. :win:

Exactly there’s numerous Ted talks on this about the power of names and words and how they define history and help shaped certain cultures. I keep telling everyone your entire thought process changes the minute you are capable of speaking another language. Especially if you pick up an Asian, African, or middle eastern language. This is a real phenomenon that historians and linguists keep reviewing. Languages are the dna road map to the world you study a language and it’s history and you can see how it spread and evolved not only itself but also society.
