nah man. the youtubes argument is overrated. i like how homie broke it down a few posts ago.

also, lets be real; most rap city viewers werent even up on youtube like that back when rap city was still on the air. and the ones that were, mostly had chitty speed. alot of people were still using dial-up back ithen, myself included. lol. that chit was more of a hassle than anything. that chit was more of a school/public computer phenomenon at the time.

THANK YOU.

the show went to chit after the 1st 2 or 3 seasons. before, it had the perfect mix of quality content & f*ckey. but eventually, it became all f*ckery and just another exploitive "reality" show about people who just-so-happened to be in college.

hell, before they would highlight a certain college. but in the later seasons, none of the cast members were even attending the same school.

U know where I can find the first 3 seasons

Some of y'all are funny tho'... cause y'all reminiscing :ahh: on the years during which BET became wack as fukk. Y'all talkin' bout how Viacom came thru and destroyed your precious BET- brehs, Bob Johnson sold that joint to Viacom in 1999. 106 debuted and Rap City had its highest viewership in the early 2000s. Of course Viacom's ownership led to that station falling the fukk off for the most part, but Rap City fell off as a show when Tigger left and the Basement concept got dropped. After that, it went through like three lame hosts and it didn't even have a "personality" anymore. It was just a two-hour block of videos, which is useless in an era where there's a 24-hour channel for rap videos AND numerous outlets on the internet. Rap City's best years stretch between the early 90s with the on-location interviews and the Basement years with Tigger... anything after that was a shell of itself.

Shows like that have to thrive off of something, and have something that draws people into watching. Nothing but music videos for 2 hours doesn't work now like it did in say, 1989. Back then, seeing that many rap videos on one show was the draw in itself. Great for that time, but eventually they had to get beyond that, so that's when you started to see Joe Clair in Cleveland with Bone Thugs, or Lez out in Cali with Snoop. That's when the show became a must-see. Then the Basement brought the rappers to the set, which was also a good look. But after that, havin' some cornball randomly introduce videos wasn't gonna be enough to keep that show afloat in the late 2000s. If anything, I'd say Rap City actually went backwards in those final years after building itself up to be a show nikkas made it a point to tune in to...

The element of surprise in my opinion was one of the best things about MTV & BET during their primes. You actually had to "catch" a video on & would also get introduced to new artists & songs just watching videos. I remember cats would be at school like "did you see the new Jay-Z video?!" And you had to go home & flip back & forth between MTV & BET waiting for it... it could take hours but you would watch some dope videos in between & gems you hadn't heard or seen before.

As much as I agree with you that it would be nice to bring back some countdowns like when artists had their personal Top 25... I think these younger attention deficit disorder asperger low IQ short attention span instant gratification era fans wouldn't have the patience for it & would hop their asses back on YouTube & our generation wouldn't be enough to sustain ratings for such a show...
There is nothing about this that is better than the way we videos today.

I know what he means, the excitement factor of it... but that's only good for nostalgia purposes. It was fun to tune in and not have any idea there was a new Wu video, then BAM it comes on and you're talkin' about it at school the next day. STILL, it's not something that's necessary now, given the other options that are available. And really, if we had the option of a YouTube or something like that back then, we wouldn't have been sittin' around waiting for videos to come on.

Don't get me wrong, I once LIVED for video shows, and tuned in faithfully. But just like how MTV and BET made shows like Soul Train and Bandstand less relevant, you had to know something was gonna make video shows lose relevance too... that's the way it goes. One day, there's gonna be something that knocks Youtube out.

BET was better back in the 90's when black culture was better and thriving. It was more than just rap music back then, there were different avenues for black music and entertainment back then than the same old fickle shyt you see today.

Culturally wise, modern BET represent the modern and common black man and woman. Regardless if Viacom controls it.

So let me ask you all this,
Where's your soul at?
Where's your appreciation for the black culture at? Where's the love for other black music besides rap?

Or are you just happy with modern raps about simping, turning up, selling coke and how materialistic you are?

fukk 106 and Rap Titty,
Bring back BET News!

Thats what I'm saying. It made for fun times looking back.

But, the reality was.... They played 3 videos a segment and you had know idea what video would be playing. You could waste a lot of time watching a show waiting on 1 video to come on.

Right... and then it might not come on that day... unless you're lucky enough to have the Box, where someone calls and pays $2.50 to resquest a video. :heh:

Again, things I can happily say I enjoyed back in the day... but would never bother with today.

BET has not represented the culture of hip hop in years.

Modern day BET does not represent or even speak for the African American community.

BET speaks for Viacom.

I watch BET from time to time and support the good shows they have on the network. The Game and Let's stay together are pretty good shows. It's a shame they cancelled the other show with Malcolm Jamal Warner and Tracee Ross.
