Why is pop/catchy music frowned upon in hip-hop/R&B?

I personally know people who bought liked and discussed Missy's music like they woukd any Hip Hop artist.
How? Who is discussing a Missy record like they would Illmatic? Death Certificate? The Diary? The Chronic?
How old were you in 97? I didn't know anyone who bought that album and I would have looked funny at anybody who did.

think what hes saying is that the mainstream airwaves were very much watered-down and extremely commercial when she debuted.

so she basically fit right into the landscape, even tho she wasn't a serious rap artist from jump. HELL, most of her singles are str8 r&b with her singing and someone else doing a rap feature.
Exactly

We will never know for sure. But I bet the demographics of Missy fans are far different from 99% of rappers.

IWW wasn't mentioned in the post you quoted. I was responding and disagreeing to your assertion that a record becomes pop based on how successful it is. I disagree with that wholeheartedly. There is also a big difference between attempting to go commercial and going pop. Very few rappers have actually gone so far as to go pop. Florida, Pit, Black Eyed Peas, Missy. Nas may have had commercial aspirations with IWW but he wasn't going pop the way Will Smith did with Big Willie Style.

Now obviously, we all use these terms sort of interchangeably on here. :yeshrug:

A record does become Pop because of how successful it is. That's the whole reason behind going Pop (appealing to as many people as possible). Commercial, mainstream music is essentially Pop music.

There is a world difference between Pitbull, Flo-Rida, and The Black Eyed Peas. They all started off Hip Hop and went Pop without ever looking back. Red, Meth, Busta, Nas, Jay, Ghost, etc. all worked with her. She still had roots in Hip Hop. Missy always has been a hybrid of Hip Hop/R&B. Nothing sounded like what she was doing. It was different, but it had mass appeal. It wasn't blatant.

As for Nas. You think it was by chance that Will needed Nas pen for Big Willie Style? And yes IWW was Pop. Great album, but still Pop. He was interpolating the Eurythmics, sampling Sting, had one of the biggest crossover acts on his single. The results: he reached entirely new audiences that weren't checking for him before abd caught flack from Hip Hop heads. They disowned him for being what they perceived a sellout move.

@JustCKing, I'd avoid anything @Wacky D says on Missy/Aaliyah/Timbaland. he has some sort of weird bias toward them. Wacky D's my boy in almost every other respect, but his struggle-opinions on the aforementioned :mjlol:

:duck:

Faceless weirdo keeps lying :mjlol: Album went platinum. In 1997. Lots of hip hop fans bought it.

Be glad I've shown you an ounce of attention. Keep worshiping me from the sidelines :tochilol:

No. A record doesn't become pop because it is successful. A record can flop but still be pop.

Yes. Going pop is watering the music down to such a degree intentionally before the record is released.
As for Nas. You think it was by chance that Will needed Nas pen for Big Willie Style?
I don't get what you're saying here.
And IWW was not a pop album. It had a few commercial records that were tastefully done. It did catch flack because Nas' audience up to that point was purely hip hop and hip hop still had some integrity in 96. Missy was an R&B hip hop hybrid as you said which is why hip hop fans didn't care about the pop sound of her first album. She wasn't one of us.

look at this idiot with the ducktales :laff:

Always trying to copy SirBiatch's slang and movement. Had him on ignore and it hurt his feelings, so now he wants to give it a try.

You can't have a dude on ignore and talk about him constantly/share his pic. Doesn't work that way, unless I'm somehow on your mind 24/7. It's impossible for @mobbinfms to post without mentioning/referencing me in some way or the other. Meanwhile, I flip the switch, and dude doesn't exist to me.
