Real R&B existed because you had singers who learned how to sing through their upbringing in the Church.

Facts.
Also, there aren't any big talent shows anymore. Singers used to go to talent shows, get booed, and then go home and master their craft.
This happened to Luther Vandross, Anita Baker, and Lauryn Hill, for example.
Current singers don't get that instant, organic feedback; they don't have to cut their chops anywhere. All they need is a laptop, a microphone, and a closet to record in. They can record & upload a song without testing the waters at all.
The closest thing to talent shows now are showcases, but artists don't really get critiqued at those.

For the past two nights my homegirl and I have been talkin about this same exact thing. We just been on Messenger trading classics and trippin off the fact that we live certain songs. This news shyt is trash. If it's good stuff out there, feel free to put a brutha on, but part of the problem, and I've seen it mentioned a few times in this thread, is that a lot of these new muthafukkas CANNOT sing. That and if there is any good R&B it's not being pushed in the mainstream like that.



I'm pissed cuz I came across this on a satellite radio station. Raheem been the truth but he and brothas and sistas of his ilk get pushed to the background after their prime years.

I miss the male and female powerhouse R&B vocalists


Where are the Luthers, Regina Belle, Teddy P, Peabo Bryson, Lisa Fischer, James Ingram, Billy Ocean, Phyllis Hyman etc....

All the current r&b artists are either singing like they’re rapping, or have whispery voices or don’t know how to carry a note live.

It’s so disappointing.

Current singers don't sing from the gut anymore. I can't tell you the last time I heard a Black R&B singer do runs in a song. Meanwhile...
I know the Chris Stapleton is a country singer, but his singing style comes straight out of Saturday night juke joints and Sunday morning service. You can say the same thing for Adele, Mayer Hawthorne, Amy Winehouse, or anybody else who took the blueprint from Black R&B/Soul singers.
It's a sad day when southern Black singers like Chris Brown (who actually had a nice voice once) are making bubblegum pop & getting outsung by wypipo.
