:hubie:Im tryna tell y'all. I've been in the industry for about 6 years years. Everytime i speak to the field guys it's the same story. :hubie:Because people are indoctrined to going to college, There's skilled trades shortages everywhere, these unions are dying for more skilled folks. Went to a couple big conventions and labor shortage was the topic of several speeches.

Unions will start you off at $15/hr, give you free schooling to go one day a week, and then you journeyman in 4 years. All the jobsites i been to, the carpenters and electricians I spoke to all make $50/hr with crazy benefits.

And before y'all say it's hard on the body, you don't have to stay for long. Get in, make journeyman, and stack up before going to college. Have a cushy office job by 35 or so.

Brehs begging for student loan forgiveness, yeah ain't no telling when that shyt coming.:manny::francis: With a trade you don't gotta ask for shyt. I'd have been way further in life ahead had I started a trade right outta highschool.

What’s not mentioned is how hard it is to get into the trades. Especially if your not Mexican. They gatekeep that shyt like a MF

Back in the day I literally called every body-shop in my city until one of them took me on breh, black, white, Arab it didn’t matter.
I put my ego aside and made those calls.

This was when I dabbled in auto body. I’m in transportation now though but it was almost the same shyt.

Edit/ I misquoted you breh and jacked up the edit
You good breh, I was super confused reading that quote tho :heh:

Good on you putting in the effort to get what you wanted man

Great post. The 'go to college' rhetoric has punched a serious financial hole in our community. Yeah you are paid well for your job but your loans erase a chunk of your income off rip.

If you didn't end up with loans I'm not talking about you obviously. You played it smart. Which, on this note, makes you the exception not the rule.

This is exactly what happened

If you were slipping on your grades your parents would tell you "Do you wanna end up doing *insert trade job*?" And now those same trades bring in serious bread:russ:

Black folks have had this disease the worst because our history of labor work and wanting to look good caused us to shame a lot of trade work. Meanwhile Hispanics crept into the trades and came up hard and fast over the past 2 decades

The black men that are in the trades have been eating good but it would be great if we cornered entire trade markets like the Hispanics do with construction/electrical work
Unpopular opinion of the decade. It shouldn't be that way but....

What made u get in this field? I feel nowadays, black men are turning into faux women, who work in air conditioned offices and gossip. Rarely hear these jobs anymore, just “get more education”.
I’m an opportunist dog, I go where the money is.

My manager at the time told me that he applied for a certain company and I did the same. I just tailored my resume to the job description (I did have the actual credentials they were looking for)

and the rest is history, I didn’t like the job at first but I grew to like it and the only way I’m leaving here is in a body bag or retirement.

Mind you I don’t love this shyt, I rather be at home with my family but this job has excellent benefits, pension, and it pays the bills and then some. It also allows me to enjoy my actual hobbies. I did my hobby for work once and hated it.

All I can say is keep your ears open, be open minded, and try your hand.

I did it all breh, I washed cars, plumbing, worked on cellular towers, shovelled snow etc. no job is beneath me but at some point you get the hunger for more. Having natural ambition helps.

How are you not red? :mjlol: I guess I don't know what I'm talking about despite 3 years of CC and being in the Construction Industry for 6 years :skip:

A good option that more brehs should consider. If I was 18 again, I'd consider it. Recession proof and you can literally work for yourself or on the side once you get enough experience. School costs a lot of money and a lot of time and you're joining the rat race which after 17 years or so is fukking tiring.
