Michael Jackson is a gift and a curse for performers IMO. The curse is that I think a lot of people have taken the wrong message from his performances, which is that the spectacle is more important than the music. Meaning you need big lights, big explosions, big skits, etc etc to make a live performance great...at the cost of the music.

I "like" Beyonce. Her music isn't particularly compelling to me, but she has some songs I like. Watching the clips in the OP and scattered throughout this thread I'm not really hearing a good performance. Instead I'm seeing a spectacle. A lot of things thrown at you, like a blockbuster movie. Obviously that's what people want these days, and it's why Marvel movies dominate yearly. But when you get beyond the hype, is that shyt legitimately good? In Beyonce's case I'm just not really sold. It's always the same over-singing/yelling. Especially with her newer music, where the songwriting kinda takes a backseat to beats and hooks.
I agree. MJ was electrifying by himself.

I think people are going on and on about the aspect of the full production not necessairly the performer herself.

to be fair, this has become the standard in pop music over the past decade or more, not just beyonce

fill the stage with 9,000 people and have a bunch of pyro and shyt going on stage

I think Bey is a great performer by herself but I’ve seen better from her like the Billboard awards performance. Beys performance the stage/production has been top notch for awhile now

dude, I just explained it to you.

Aretha and Whitney are great singers but they are not great performers. This is why in the musical world we have descriptions like best musician, best singer, greatest performer etc...complete packages explained below

This performer category is silly. It's just something invented by the show bizness in the last decades. If you're a great singer, you're a great performer since singing is performing.

Performing include too many things, even things that have nothing to do with music.

When it comes to musicians/slngers, the main criteria to judge them on is their music/singing.

The fact that a musician is a better dancer than the other is not enough to put him above musically.

You're giving dance too much importance. Dancing and visual part of show are important but they are not that important to put an average singer in the position pf the GOAT female musician.

The main "performance" of musician is his music. The rest is secondary. Nobody is going to tale Mozart or Stevie Wonder out of the Goat musician competition because they did not dance.

Dancing has always been important in Black popular music and pop music in general.

James Brown
Michael Jackson
Prince etc.
The dancing was a big part of the skill set. Likewise the white imitators made it a big thing too - Elvis and them.

Beyoncé is clearly a better performer and artist than Whitney. Sure, Whitney would crack out a power ballad that Beyonce could never compete with in a live performance. But bey would have her in every other aspect. While doing a good power ballad herself.

Being a great singer does not make you a greet performer.

Got nothing against anybody. i just don't understand the raising of Beyonce to unreal levels...
Shes the best looking women on earth, shes the best performer ever, best artist ever... she once picked up an elephant on her back:stopitslime:

This is very easy to explain

1) Beyonce is a GOD in the gay community.
She's surpassed being a gay Icon the way tina turner, madonna, cher and those types were
she is like michael jackson, the beatles, and elvis all rolled into one to them.

2) Gays run the entertainment business.
She has made lifelong fans out of extremely influential and powerful people
this is why despite lagging behind her female cohorts in album sales, social media following, revenue streams -
she still towers above, or is right there with them in terms of popularity and visibility

3) Music standards have lowered for the general public :francis:
in the 80's and 90's the MUSIC had to be great and authentic. Now the VISUAL has to be great.
Her visuals are "Woke", but her music is bland and campy - and that's just fine for music consumers now. times have changed.

with all that said, Beyonce has turned herself into a brand, a movement, an icon. somebody that has really surpassed music altogether.

as a music snob, she's nothing to me, but to the masses she's something to behold. can't take that away from her. :manny:

Thats all I’m saying too.

I don’t know anyone outside of gays and black women that act like that with her.

Nothing wrong with it either

Shes dope but her music isn’t affecting or changing lives. Just the Michael Bay performance that nobody has done in awhile

The best explanation rolled into one.
