It wasnt commercially but it was critically. Not to mention it got bootlegged heavy. It made in undeniable impact on the rap game. Labeled classic off bat. Reasonable Doubt didnt critically or commercially. I don't understand how this is an argument cause it's not like it's a slight to Jay.

NY all day..Da Stead & BK..
In NY, it was a big deal

Outside of NY though...:patrice:
It wasn't even a "big" deal in NY. It was a dope album. Amongst other dope albums. I'm not speaking on the actual quality of the album. It's a classic. Just saying it was a grower. It wasn't viewed like that off rip.

I think people would take this better if it were worded differently.

"RD was slept on initially outside of NY." is another way of saying this that wouldnt get nikkas in they feelings so fast. What he is saying is accurate, but its gonna rustle the hive a bit because of how he said it. :yeshrug:

This is an Internet argument. Dude probably was introduced to RD thru the Internet.

That was a good number back then tho. Gold debut with no major push was a success. It parlayed him to a bigger deal. IIlmatic took years to go platinum as well. The haters are the ones tryna rewrite history.

lol, Bait reply to try to turn this into a ''Nas vs Jay'' thread.

The illmatic situation is a lil different, The hype for Nas was there he was
being consider a golden child of hiphop, Due to heavy bootlegging Columbia Records
had to salvage what they had and put out illmatic as it is, illmattic was suppose to
have upwards to 14 -15 songs on it.

He's got a point Jay was gonna throw in the towel because of that fact, but dame encouraged him to go on. If future's album dropped in the summer of 96 he would sell less than Seagram's 'Reality Check'

I used to ain't no...all the time here in LA back in '96/'97

TBH I didn't hear too much of illmatic or IWW
It was Foxy's song from the Nutty Professor sdtk.
Went plat. So did her album. Hov didn't.
Illmatic mattered outside of NY.
Only dopeboys and backpack nikkas liked RD.
