I used to think Kendrick was very overrated. You'll see if you look through my post history.

But if you run through his catalog you'll see a ton of high quality music. He's very consistent.

There is some push back with Kendrick because of the way publications dyckride him. Billboard had him over Pac, Nas and Biggie in their 50 greatest rappers of all time list. But not a lot of rappers have a 3 album run of GKMC, TPAB, and DAMN

That's not really a Kendrick problem.
It’s not really his problem, it’s just that people get to doing all-time rankings… you start cross examining through different eras

Since there isn’t anybody else who’s truly great from his era you gotta compare him to older nikkas. That’s when the subjective, era-biased, hypothetical arguments start coming out

Honestly, before this beef Kendrick was maybe just outside my Top 10. I'm more of a Nas/Jay-Z era fan. But the performance he put forth in this battle, just catapulted him up the rankings. Just the variety of the type of diss records he put out was crazy. Now it got me revisiting his whole catalogue. I wouldn't argue against anyone that wanted to put him as the GOAT on their list.

That's still not a knock on him. This was my response to someone else.
Being an outlier is just the byproduct, and the weaker era is not within his control.

The game changed and lyrical ability/technical skill/MC integrity is no longer the priority. Labels watered it down, but social media and fan choice supercharged the image/lifestyle of rap completely cannibalizing the craft of rapping.

If anything Kendrick should be seen as the last of a dead breed, which would help folks understand that he'd be just fine if he was born in 72 instead of 87. He's a student of the game, a master at artistic narrative and picture painting, and elite album curator.

Not real life but this is like assuming Luke Skywalker couldn't compare to old Jedi/Sith if he was born in that era.

To use real life, if Ice Cube is considered an elite rapper and GOAT contender by many/most, there's no reason to believe Kendrick couldn't deal with the 90s.
The era bias is a one-way street, because it's extremely difficult to be a product of the 90s, or a student of hip-hop history if you're not old enough, and believe Kendrick would have an issue in the 90s. The cats old enough are simply gatekeeping based on nostalgic merit.

Best discog but I can't see him over Nas and that's not me being old head. When it take voice flows and everything into consideration. It was written era Nas is the perfect MC or the closest thing we ever seen to this day.

I like to break down GOAT into era, and he’s the Nas of this era to Aubrey’s Hov…definitely has a claim as GOAT in that sense…don’t have him as THE singular goat and not a huge fan personally, but can definitely get younger cats thinking so.. objectively he has the resume

Good point about his consistency. I just added that to my original post

I been listening to hip hop for over 30 years and I have no issue with him being in the GOAT convo. I have him in my top 7.

I don’t disagree necessarily. But even with the Luke Skywalker analogy there was a Darth Vader & Darth Sidious during his time

That being said Kendrick is clearly a direct offspring of the golden era. I think he definitely coulda did his thing back then
