Just let it grow organically without labeling it. Once you bring in labels like "boyfriend", "girlfriend", you start placing people into these pre-conceived societal boxes of what a relationship is "supposed" to look like, which most people are not going to fit. I think that's why so many relationships fail.

Dude in question is in a long-distance relationship, that is open most of the time. Girl is carrying a whole damn Chinese flag with her and she knows it.
