Then I realized that the book you mentioned, ('the shallows') is written by the same guy

yeah, I was rambling about that book in here a few months ago. Great read. I read The Shallows a few years ago, and then the new one. Dope you read it too. I have read maybe 7 books on social media/digital communications, and this by far hit closest to the human impact. There's so much that just quickly explains things, like why do we all text like machines? Why do we 'react' instead of respond? Because we have conditioned ourselves to.

There's so much that just quickly explains things, like why do we all text like machines? Why do we 'react' instead of respond? Because we have conditioned ourselves to.

It's a fascinating subject. Once you realize how they engineered these systems and algorithms to monopolize your attention/engagement and feed off innate human needs to seek info and novelty and recognition then it makes sense.

Regarding why we all text the same, I found this but from that authors blog that adds a good point:

When we allow ourselves to be guided by predictive algorithms, in acting, speaking, or thinking, we inevitably become more predictable ourselves, as Rochester Institute of Technology philosopher Evan Selinger pointed out in discussing the Apple system:

Predicting you is predicting a predictable you. Which is itself subtracting from your autonomy. And it’s encouraging you to be predictable, to be a facsimile of yourself. So it’s a prediction and a nudge at the same moment.

It’s a slippery slope, and it becomes more slippery with each nudge. Predicted responses begin to replace responses, simply because it’s a little more efficient to simulate a response —a thought, a sentence, a gesture — than to undertake the small amount of work necessary to have a response. And then that small amount of work begins to seem like a lot of work — like correcting your own typos rather than allowing the spellchecker to do it. And then, as original responses become rarer, the predictions become predictions based on earlier predictions. Where does the algorithm end and the self begin?

Out and about this early morning. I'm at this frou frou Donut spot, and notice multiple dogs in the bakery. One is this old white woman and this massive shaved sheepdog.

But more germane to this conversation was a breh with his pretty ass white girl, but she was definitely not a phat ass white girl. More Margot Robbie and less Sara Jay.

As a breh that as speaks so well, I recognize him as a member of our clan. Had to be rocking a Vassar or Emory t-shirt.

At the same time he was in some J's and two gold chains. That perfect mix....

Emily was handling what looked to be a Pitbull.

Folks was cool with Ethel and her monstrosity, but Blondie was getting the side eye.



Anyway I start shaking my head. Turn around to see a sister behind me. Also shaking her head.

Having dipped more than a toe into that demographic, I honestly could not be sure if the dog was his or hers.

At my old job, the CFO had one and she brought her to work everyday and the Dog was taller than me (6’2) lol. Downtown Toronto you’ll see that dog everywhere and it’s always them rich white women that wear the New Balance 327s

I ain’t dabble that much in white women but I assume they all got a French bulldog or a pug or sum
