What happens if you take a poor man's version of the scares from the Grudge, a poor man's version of the plot of the Ring, and set it in a post-social media Japanese Society? You get the very fun but incredibly mid
Ghost Station.
A public service worker at Oksu Station witnesses a shocking incident and recruits his friend to help uncover the truth behind the station's mysterious happenings.
Trailer warning: This gives away all the best parts of the movie, but if you're not gonna watch anyway, it'll also give you enough plot to figure out the rest...
It's a fun, popcorn horror with homages to the great J-Horrors; and a couple of stand out moments. A journalist needs a viral story ASAP, and her friend lets her know about a weird occurrence at a train station which leads to a Ju-On/Ringu mashup of a plot.
It's at its best when it's not taking itself too seriously, with some nice bits of humor mixed between scares. There's also a cool thing the director does where he films a conversation with a close up of one character while the other character is still in the shot but doing something on the side. It makes exposition dumps feel dynamic with action while we hear the plot unfold.
The plot itself is very iterative of past J-Horrors, particularly the Ring. It's not terrible, it's interesting enough, but there are plenty of contrivances and tropes. The ending pays everything off pretty nicely. But the scares of the weakest point of the movie, and even at a short 80 minute run time, it has a couple of parts that drag.
So...very mid, but entertaining. I'd rate it similar to Until Dawn, where it was a fun ride worth checking out, but not scary and with some obvious flaws.
