Agreed. I let Maelle win at first because I heard someone say that it could lead to a sequel, so I checked it out. Then I went back and fought as Verso.
There's a lot of debate on which is the "better" ending, but honestly? Renoir was right.

Imagine being in his shoes, losing one kid and you're about to lose both your wife AND another kid due to that grief. He clearly didn't want to destroy the canvas, but he even said that he's left no choice. We had to kick Aline's ass for her to finally leave, the same thing's gonna have to happen for Maelle if it comes to that. Aline's the head of the Painter's Council and was on the ground coughing and wheezing when she was back in the real world. Maelle (or I guess Alicia in the real world) is permanently disabled due to the fire, so I doubt that at present, she can hold out as long as her mom. Plus she's 16 and isn't as skilled as the rest of her family yet. So in Maelle's ending, I think it's only a matter of time before her parents come scoop her up, because no way are they going to let their second kid die.
Plus I feel like this ending just continues Maelle's habit of running from her problems. She joined the Expedition because she couldn't handle life in Lumiere. When she realized how dire and dangerous the Continent was, she didn't handle it too well (which is fair, she's 16). Alicia didn't want to leave the painting because the grief and pain (both metaphorical and literal) were too much for her, which is again, understandable. This ending keeps the world of Lumiere and its inhabitants alive, but has terrible implications on Maelle's wellbeing. Plus Verso...
Verso's ending is the better option in terms of having Maelle learn to actually process that grief and move on. Verso back at the camp had said that all of this was the result of the Dessendre Family not being able to grieve properly, and he's right. The only one who seemed to be handing it well is Clea, and she might be on her TLOU Ellie shyt right now. The downside of this ending is that the canvas goes away, and everyone along with it. But I think it's entirely possible that in time, Maelle could grow in her powers and bring back Lumiere along with everyone else, if that's where they want to go with a potential sequel.
In the end, the people of Lumiere get screwed over because a family of gods used Lumiere as a boxing ring because they don't have proper coping methods.
I gotta do the side content and figure out what also happened, but yeah, Lumiere lowkey is cooked regardless.
Also Expedition 60 are those dudes.

If they had managed to pass on the message, imagine how things would've went. Or if they had even succeeded in time.
